I just got back from my girlfriends.  This is only my second time with a motorcycle in town and the FIRST time in any kind of traffic.  WOW what a blast.  It was so much fun I can't believe its not illegal.  I'm still really new at this but I've got all my gear, a great bike, a MSF course and a decent amount of back roads and parking lot time.  I just have to say it again. WOW

Test the boundaries carefully, the first time you give it full throttle it'll scare the bejeesus out of you. Work your way up, and don't try to stunt before you're ready.

Also, have fun!  :)

If you think you don't need a helmet, you probably don't

dont let too many people know how fun it really is  or else they might just make it illegal. :icon_mrgreen:

Don't think they aren't working on it.

I dunno about that...
I don't think there's anything wrong with my bike, and, even in first gear, unless I launch it, it doesn't have enough torque to lift the front up... That being said, full throttle really doesn't even do it for me anymore... Thinking of buying something faster actually...  :) (Read: GSX-R 750)

I did pull an unintentional wheelie shortly after I started riding though... Remember it like it was yesterday... Dodge ram pickup pulls up next to me (he's in the right lane, I'm in the left) at a red light, and his lane ends 50M after the light...  :thumb: I was thinking at the time, I know I'm faster than that thing, and, what a jerk, why the hell did he do that (we're the only 2 vehicles on the road). So, I launched my bike like I'd launch my car, BAD IDEA. Revved it up to about 5000rpm, let the clutch out fairly quickly (I didn't just let go of it, but, I didn't ride it out for 3 blocks either.) Instantly, wheel in the air, THAT scared the bejeesus out of me, totally wasn't expecting it. Let go of the throttle SLAM into the ground...

Now, the part that really makes me remember it...

When I was coming back down, I guess the forces involved caused my testicles to be sitting on top of the extremely hard steel gas tank......

I was GRIMACING for 3 or 4 blocks, it felt like someone just kicked me in the nuts.

I just think it was my guardian angel going, "you're a f%$king idiot, don't f%$king pull that shaZam! again!"

No permanent injuries (well, don't really want kids at this point in my life anyway, so... :))

5000 shouldn't really do that... have you changed the gearing? In first I have to crank it to about 7000 before popping the clutch, and that only gets my wheel a foot or two in the air. Also, if you haven't learned a bit more about using the clutch to wheelie, you probably don't want to move to a bike which can power wheelie, theres a better chance of dumping it if you accidentally wheelie and don't expect it to happen.

I'm sure someone else will say this too but anyone can go fast in a straight line, it takes practice to really control all aspects of the bike.

I'm gonna agree, if you still 'accidentally' wheelie on the GS, you will kill yourself on something like a gix750, or even any of the 600's.   They will all power wheelie under hard acceleration, much less clutch dumping :thumb:   Learn to ride the GS well enough that you can keep up with a gix750 in everything but the straights.  Thats when your ready to move up :thumb:

Hey I just started riding about 1.5-2 months ago. Yeah it's a blast. I rode up and down an alley behind my house like 2 or 3 times then hit the streets. I have not had any problems or been in any accidents. I think riding a moped for 6yrs ( since I was 12 ) has helped me. My friend also feels the same about moped helping us. Riding is really fun... there doesn't even have to be any traffic and I think it's fun. Actually I don't like heavy traffic.. it kinda ruins it. Back country roads are nice to cruise on too.

spc

Heavy traffic sucks, because you have two choices.  Wait it out knowing you could rip by all these cars or rip by them and take the chance of getting hit :o :o  Be safe cagers are fuckin tards :thumb:

I remember having a similar thought the first few times I rode my bike...

One thing that really comes to mind though. I live in Ontario, so, we've got seatbelt laws, and helmet laws, but I'm frequently in the states where some do not even require a helmet, yet, most of those states still require seatbelt use...

I dunno, just makes seatbelt laws, to me, seem pretty ridiculous when I can jump on my bike virtually naked with just a helmet on, and ride down the road beside someone driving a car, not wearing a seatbelt, and if a cop looked at me, and looked at the driver of the car, he could only give a ticket to the car driver.......

Not trying to say anything bad about motorcycles, just a peculiarity about seatbelt laws...

Thanks for all the responses.  I was just wanting to share my exhilaration.  Maybe help a looky-lue to decide whether they wanted to take the plunge.

It has been pointed out @ work that there is a marked improvement in my attitude when I've ridden to work vs driving.

in PA, seatbelt laws are rediculous.. they go nicely with the no helmet motorcycle law.

that said, I wear a full helmet, I'd lose mad cool points grinning like a boy who saw his first nekid girl all the time.

Haha... my friends and I call that the "@$$hole lane."
