Poor man's bar rsers

I've been thinking my bike would fit me better on long rides if I moved the bars up a bit, but didn't particularly feel like a bar swap or splurging for a $100 set of risers. So I bought a second set of the top caps for the bar mounts (from Psychochild in the classifieds - thanks!) and flipped them upside down. I'll let you know if they make it more comfortable for my commute soon. Pictures are up in the Wiki.

I put a set of the GenMar risers on my 97 GS and then transferred them to my 02 GS which left me with an extra set of the caps so I put the extra caps on the old 97 like you just did.

It was helpful but not nearly as comfortable to me as the GenMars were.

The most economical method to achieve the same results would be a new set of bars if you can figure out which ones you want.  Can be had for a small fraction of the cost of the risers.  The GenMars move the bars about as far as you can go without needing a longer brake line and/or possible wiring and cable changes.

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I went with the Gen Mars and flipped the original caps upside down on top of the risers.
I had to reroute the cables for it to work.

Puts me in a nice touring position.

Yes, but figuring out which bars I want (and which ones won't require changes to the cables) is the hard part. :) I'll see how these caps work out and if I want more pullback. I'm pretty tall, so moving the bars up was more important to me than moving them backwards.

You could also find some aluminum bar stock whatever thickness you wanted, cut to size, drill, and make some spacers. That would give you extra hight.
with my set up I got 2 1/4 inches up and 1 1/4 inches back.

I think you could go up a good 1 1/2 before needing to reroute any thing.
