That's the number you need to remember when you go to Walmart.  We've heard all this talk about buying the ES12BS and laying it on it's side.  Haberdashery!  The ES10LA2 is an exact fit.  Yes, an exact fit.  I will give you all the benefit of the doubt and assume that it's a relatively new product that Srinath hasn't yet heard about.  It costs $33 after a $10 core charge.

actually if you want to get cheap you get the ghetto everstart $19 battery and it works just fine.

the point of the ES12BS is that it's a sealed, zero-maintenance battery that puts out more amps and is more stable and won't do stuff like leak acid all over your bike if you do something stupid like lay the thing over when you try to put your foot down in a pothole while trying to impress this chick you're real hot for and only end up throwing her ass in the ditch...

Honestly, I might return it and get the ES12BS but probably not.  I just need something to get the bike started without a jump and I'm too lazy to drive 15 minutes back to walmart for a superior product.  Yep, I'm pulling the old GS out of the cryogenic deep freeze.  I haven't ridden it since last summer.  I'm ripping the motor out of my Vanagon to do the Subaru 2.2L swap and need an alternate mode of transportation.

I don't bother with the sealed battery...well i bought one for my TL but only because the cheap battery wouldn't crank the fucker.  I have one of those $19 batteries in my CX and it provides way more than enough oomph to get her all hot and bothered.

Where do you get the Everstarts from?

I think everstart is a sears brand.

How do you tell what battery will fit the GS. Is there some sort of standard?

I found this battery that is recommended for the GS. Maybe these measurements can be used to help fuiind the right battery?

Those are the numbers starting with ES in the first post. 

The numbers are similar to the Yuasa numbers:

10L-B2       OEM battery with right side vent.
10L-A2       Exact same battery except vent on left side, less expensive.

Numbers vary in detail for the different brands but most are similar, take the Yuasa numbers with you and you'll find the right one.

I've always used the 10L-A2 batteries for the GS.  Relocate vent hose.

Motorcycle batteries are all made to specifications laid down in a JIS (japanese industrial standard). Some of these JIS standards follow old BS(british standard) standards laid down in the in the 40s and 50s before the japs started to dominate the bike market and some very old jap battery styles from the 60s are direct copies of ones first used on old british built bikes. As they started to dominate the market they introduced their own battery types and layouts.
This way of manufacturing allows interchangabilty between different makes. The JIS code (in this case YB10L-2) relates to such things as type (lead acid, sealed, gell etc) voltage, cold cranking ability, charge rates, dimensions, max weight, terminal layout and vent position. If you buy and fit a battery that is not a YB10-L2 you can expect something to be different. This difference may be non-infuencing but equally it may have some other effect realted to its electrical capabilities. Motorcyle batteries are not all the same and just because it fits doesnt mean it is a direct replacement.

I take mine to the store, and get another one the same size with the terminals on the right sides.  The tiniest tiniest battery has enough cranking amps for the GS, so you don't have to be picky.  I was in a bind once and started her with a battery from my computer's UPS.

$32 seemed like a smokin' deal compared to what they wanted at the stealer(@ $100    ). Granted, the ES10LA2 is somewhat of a pain in the ass to fill and then trickle charge for 7+ hours, which may be the standard for a motorcycle battery, I wouldn't know, this is the first time I've had to buy a battery.

Do the sealed batteries come pre-charged?

Does anyone have a picture of that sealed battery installed in a gs?

dom...don't bother with all that trickle charge fill perfect bullshit...i just fill the thing with acid and stab it in the bike and crank away.  they've almost always got enough juice off the bat to crank small motors.
