I was in austin town, ohio watching my aunts house for 2 weeks. I went out for my daily ride and was gone for about 20mins. I started home and was almost there. I got to this busy 4 lane highway that I had to cross to get home. There was a maroon colored pickup in front of me and the light was red. When the light turned green the lady in front of me turned left and I went straight. Next thing I know I just barely glanced at some headlights before I got hit and then I was sliding across the road. I both me and the bike stopped sliding in a towing place's parking lot. a whole crowd of people were around me ( a bunch of people that witnessed it ) and I sat up for a second and looked at the bike and the truck that hit me. Everyone started telling me to lay down in case I had any spinal injuries. I asked how bad my bike was and the guy holding my head said, " it can be replaced don't worry about it and relax until paramedics  get here." Cops, ambulance, and firetruck got there with a minute or two and they checked me out and put an air cast around my ankle. They loaded me up in the ambulance and took me to the hospital. We got there and waited a few minutes just getting checked in and then I got my room and called my mom to let her know I was alright and which hospital I was at. Then they took me to x-rays and took me back to my room and the cop finally got there and said that he asked the guy what happened and he said the light was yellow when he went through it. I guess a bunch of witnesses said I had the right of way and the light I went through was green even the lady in the red pickup stopped I guess and told them it was green when she went through it. He said he wrote the guy a ticket for running a red light. The cop got all the guys info for me and some kinda report that has bike value estimation and stuff says highway patrol on it. I haven't looked at the papers much . My mom called my insurance company today and they are supposed to have a claims person call me within the next 24hrs. I haven't seen the bike yet but my mom said the left handle bar is pushed down really far and tank is dented and scratched on both sides, plastics are broken, headlights hanging by wires ( but not broken ) front turn signals busted, and the frame was already bent before I wrecked so it's probably not any better now. I have tons of roadrash and a sprained ankle. today all my muscles hurt and even some I didn't know I had. This is my first accident and I need to ask you guys for opinions on what I should do. Do you think I'll get enough to replace my '94 GS500?

The guy had insurance, right?  His insurance should pay your med bills and for your bike's 'before the wreck" value.

spc

Yeah his insurance will pay the absolute lowest NADA value they can sum up based on prior condition of the vehicle...

I got hit by a truck too.....he ran    My thumb was seriously broken and I go in for the last surgery to remove a stuck pin from it on tuesday :o :o

Man, you had a tough day.

Were you wearing "protection".  You know, jacket, helmet, gloves, boots?  Curious -- promise not to criticize.

It's notes like yours that help highlight that motorcycles share the road with a whole lot of bigger vehicles, some of which are piloted by people who don't pay attention to anything smaller than they are.

Sounds like you're doing relatively well, though your bike is likely written off.  Haven't a clue what the Insurance Co will do, but when you learn, please post.

Heal quickly...

So sorry to hear about your accident.  Don't forget to claim your gear and helmet from the other driver's insurance.

Today I was waiting to turn left. This intersection has arrows, so the left arrows turned green. One of the drivers coming from the other direction obviously wasn't paying attention and just started driving (he was driving straight, not turning left). He ran the red light, completely and TOTALLY oblivious to the injury he could so easily have caused if the folks in the left-turn lane hadn't been paying attention. The two cars in front of me and everyone behind me were all shaking their fists and shouting at this moron, who looked at everyone with a "what's YOUR problem" look on his face. It's a jungle out there.

did you not buy the "truck repellent" ? see the thread on handguns.  seriously i hope you are alright.  you may experience some difficulty with the other insurance company.  if you know a lawyer or advocate that can help all the better.  if not let me know if you have any real difficulty.  i am in Maine so my help is limited.

Over three-quarters of all accidents at intersections come from what's in front of you.  It pays to count 1 - 2 - 3 before entering the danger zone.  I don't have enough fingers to count the number of times I've seen morons run a RED LIGHT.

Even through we may have right of way, we lose the battle.  Be wary -- don't trust completely -- ride like someone is out to get you.  Stay alive.   :)

They will offer the lowest nADA but you can conter for the top value and probably end up with more.hagel.  insurance want out as cheap as possible, dont just take the first offer.

Wow 11 replies since last night. Thank you all for your input and concern. I was wearing my helmet which the paramedic said saved my face and I had on a jacket ( $20 for wal-mart ) and gloves ( $12 from advanced auto parts ) . I figured neither one would help me much but I couldn't afford real gear . The jacket didn't help much evidently because my whole right side from just under my arm all the was down to my knee is covered in some pretty bad roadrash. The gloves did help I think because I only have one little scratch on my right hand and the left is perfect. The only thing I see wrong with the helmet is a bunch of deep scratches on the clear visor. He has Grange (sp?) insurance. My dad said he thinks my insurance will contact his and they will figure things out and then my insurance will explain it to me and then they'll send me papers and stuff to sign.He said don't sign until I'm completely healed and feel the amount is enough to cover the loss. A insurance claims person is supposed to call me today so I'll let you guys know whats going on.

Onlypastrana199

Get them to cover your helmet too just because its a little scratched doesn't mean its good. Helmets are made to withstand one impact... Glad you're ok

Just because no one has said it... if you can't afford gear (Fieldsheer is some damn fine cheap gear) you can't afford to ride. Ebay has some pretty good prices on closeout Fieldsheer as does www.sandhillpowersports.com

Rest up!

Glad you are ok, If you have Receipts for you helmet you can get it replaced as well as the rest of your gear, if not, its harder but they should give you fair market value for it.

I work in insurance, I know that our first offer is rarely the max we can go to, always counter with a fair number, dont ask for more than the bike is worth, but at least the max amount you would expect out of an absolutly perfect bike.  If you have any questions feel free to PM me and Ill do my best to answer em.

glad you're alive, man.  Go hug a loved one and smile alot... I know I did after I had a crash that could have been more serious.  Some things I learned...  Call your insurance company and suspend/cancel your insurance policy on your bike.  I called mine after my bike was totalled to tell them about the accident, and informed them that it was totalled, but they continued to keep my policy running (on a totalled bike) :2guns:  Once I caught on and called them back to cancel, they sent me a refund check for the remainer of the policy i didn't use.  The quicker you cancel the bigger the refund.

Keep a bill for all your healing expenses.  Everything from bandaids and asprin.  Every expense that relates to injury... ambulance ride, drugs, x-rays, etc. should be totalled and you should expect to get that total doubled or maybe tripled for pain and suffering.  This is aside from your loss of bike and gear.  Good luck, heal up :thumb:

DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT cancel your policy untill your claims adjuster informs you that you should do so, ask the claims dude what to do about that, every company has its own policy on that part but when the total out a bike, they will cancel out the policy once it has been deemed totaled.

Of course this only applies if you have full coverage, if you just have liability(other wise known as PLPD) this wouldnt apply

Man glad you made it alive.  If the other insurance company call's do not admit anything, prior damage to the bike, gear, anything.

Just wondering do you have full coverage or liability?

Not always true.  Progressive didn't cancel mine, they kept charging me for a totalled bike.  Who wants to pay insurance on a wrecked bike anyway, if he was insured at the time of the accident, thats what matters.  If for some reason it is not deemed totalled and repaired, a new policy can be started later on, after the bike is repaired.

Don't let insurance folks tell you you have to have reciepts either... its REPLACEMENT value.  As in, current market value.  Look up what it will cost you to replace it, print it out, and keep it in your records.
