Turkina

Umm, I want to reply but dunno where to start!
Read the forums and look at what people talk about... the first mod that everyone should make is to put the bike into surgery:  Whip out the Dremel tool of Doom (tm) and give the bike a fenderectomy!
And after cleaning carbs, seeing if you need to replace a couple rubber hoses, etc. , and riding your bike for a while, if you experience some bottoming out, redo the suspension :)  I gotta do that.

Oh, and welcome to the board!

Turkina

Oops, i just looked at the pic... bike is already fenderless and tuned up

That's one paint job :)

when you get it must post pics of teh paint job.

you can upgrade your suspension (100 bucks for front and back) and you can put in a igintion advancer and maybe even put in some new bars on it if you want. There is plenty you can spend your money on if you want to work on the bike.
'01 GS500. Mods: Katana Shock, Progessive Springs, BobB's V&H  Advancer Clone, JeffD's LED tail lights & LED licence plate bolt running lights, flanders superbike bars, magnet under the bike. Recent mods: Rejet with 20/62.5/145, 3 shims on needle, K&N Lunch box.

pantablo

Looks like you got a good deal.
First thing to change-and it really is a must-do mod- is to replace the front fork springs with progressive suspension springs (about $60). then if necessary you can install a late model Katana rear shock ($20-$40 on ebay). The suspension on the GS500 (GS500E is same) is really "budget".

After that the only really important thing to take care of is replacing the tires with good quality rubber. Everything else is nice to have/do but isn't really necessary.

Oh, yeah. If it hasn't been done you should rejet the carburetors even for stock exhaust/air filter since these bikes are notoriously lean from factory. You'll be able to tell by looking to see if the brass plugs over the air mix screws are still there.

Here's a good pictorial how-to for rejetting with good pictures of the brass plugs and the whole process:
http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/
You can also ask the seller if its been done-he may not know as the previous owner may have done it.

Welcome to the world of gs500 ownership. You've come to the right place. Check out my site for info on tires, rejetting, suspension, and many other mod ideas.

Step #1:  Buy a dozen cans of Krylon and remove that "$500" paint job..

By the time you finish with shipping and getting that bike into a condition you're happy with, your costs will easily double.  But even at a little over 2 grand, to have a bike in good condition that you are happily and safely riding is a good deal!  Good luck.

I dount if its going to be 2K+... but the paint job looks a little ghey ... dont you think ...It has colors that aren't in a straight man's vocab...

Done! I read from page 1 to 89 and on . Pretty much repetitive people like me asking the same questions over and over lol but thats ok, its expected.

I guess i posted in excitement because i was happy to get the bike and I
also found alot of tutorials available.

Definently when i get it first thing going is the paint sand it down and think of wich color i will go with on it.

I bought this bike as a winter project bike my last bike was zx9 i sold it when i was moving this year from florida to nj for school basically i got the gs for the cheap price because i only had 1300 left over after paying for this semester of school i wish i would of been able to find something newer or more power but thats life and i'll make it the best gs i can.

Thanks for the welcome tukina and others.

Pantablo- all points taken and recorded in my head!

I wondered if i made a good purchase at first because i knew book value on it is like 900 us but oh well no worries or regrets.

dmp there wont be any shipping because the guy is coming up to ny this weekend to drop off a few bikes to peoiple and is delivering mine too so out the door total of 1075 for it.

here are pics of my old bike the crash car was when a drunk driver ran a red light and tried to me.

Trust me i know its going to be really weird going from a zx9 to a gs 5 but with school i lack the money to buy anything good yet so i am settling for now because i have this hunger everyday i dont know if you guys ever had it like u have no ride at the moment and it drives you crazy everyday you dont ride, you feel like just carrying your helmet around just for hope anyway thats how bad i was so i am elated now to pick this bike up.

most likely alot of cosmetics to come on it does anyone thing a crb 600 f3 full fairing should fit with ease if not then i will have to start checking out powerbronze for those kits available.

will keep you all updated andsorry about lack of punctuation i was just excited replying and rushing.

If you are going to paint over...here is a few tips...
1. Do not rattle can it. Rattle can paint doesn't harden fully, and tends to dissolve in gas, and it makes runs easy in paint and clear coat, and color choice is pretty limited and it looks cheap ass...I know trust me...do not do it.
2. Wait for a crash or other mishap, and do it then...you get someone else to pay for your desire.
3. Find a stock color you like, buy the set (the black came in 7-8 years, and red in 5-6 and stock paint is better than any paint dont after...cos material is new and clean so the prep is great when new) and you sell your set back into this site or ebay.
4. Yea that looks ghey...I am not going to sugar coat it...but if its in good shape... You know chicks dig ghey guys... who they can get to play for their team...   You know... wink wink... But you just have to stay away from those Will and Grace types...I guess stay away from tight leather...
Other than that...enjoy...and dont create work and expense for yourself...god knows it creates enough for you.
Cool.

Check the tank for rust!!!  :o
Sounds like you already paid but if you spot any rust, have the owner knock some duckets off the asking price. I did and ended up paying only $800.00 in the end...signed, sealed, & owner-delivered!  :thumb:
 And welcome!

Hey, now.  Chartreuse is a damn good color for bass fishing baits in clear water.  It's a kinda neon yellowish color with a hint of green.  On anything else, it's ghey.
