so while i am marking time waiting for the HDDVD/blue ray thing to come to a conclusion, i can not stand watching my dvds played on a standard player on my HDTV.  i was thinking of getting a up-convert dvd player with hdmi.  has anyone used or have one of these attached to a hd tv?  if so is it that much better than standard or progressive scan?

thx

I have a Phillips DVP5960 hooked up to my westinghouse HDTV.  It was inexpensive and got decent reviews.  Should hold me over until the prices of HD/blue-ray come down.  Can't compare it to progressive scan, my last DVD player was a real cheapo.  It is better than a regular DVD player.  Not sure if all older DVD players were this way, but I couldn't get my old DVD player to fit a widescreen image to my TV properly, but I can with the upconverting player.  Not on par with HD though.  If you stand back a few feet it looks really good, but it's not as vivid as HD.  Overall I'm happy with my choice, but look forward to having real HD video hooked up to it

Im not a super reviewer but...

I have an RCA something DVD player and a 52" Wide Screen Samsung I think ? Flat LCD HDTV w/ 1024/?? 1080i  and I just switched from the component (3 color cable) to HDMI and... WOW! It is a big difference  :thumb:

I just hate that I got a damn wide screen HDTV and unless I "Format" or "Zoom" something... Even wide screen movies STILL HAVE THE DAMN BLACK BARS ON TOP AND BOTTOM

I have an Oppo DV-970HD:

It's a GREAT deal- the picture quality is great at 1080i, definitely noticeable from my oldder one, which was component output. The best feature for me is that it is region-free, so I can play all my wierd Asian martial arts flicks on it without worry.
For $150, I don't think you can beat it.

i can get a used hd player for that.  the upconverts with hdmi are all well under 100 bucks and some around 50
