would the "resurrected species" be able to survive in todays climate?, things were different then, several global warming and cooling cycles and all O0

We need more air conditioning to battle global warming !

They could totally live in Canada, Mammoths, that is.  Or even stepps of Russian.  Stalin could be a resurected mammoth herder.

i;m more worried of a bush/cheney clone

I certainly agree with that.  Thankfully, W's natural DNA was only able to produce drunken college chicks, so the Bush family reign of death is nearly at an end.
cloning politicians of any affiliation should be puinishable by i dunno, something less than fun

Yeah, would be cool... But we really shouldn't F#$K with nature. Like, whatever happens when Hitler gets resurrected... Limit exists somewhere...

This post scores a perfect 100 on the "retarded statement scale".

A)  You can't resurect Hitler.  You might be able to clone him.
B) Assume he was cloned: Would he be recognized as THE Hitler in 40 years when he was old enough to lead, or a man that looked like him?
C) Would he have as much political influence?  Remember, he wasn't magic, or the anti-Christ, or a demon.  He was a very pursasive public speaker.
D) Would any government in existance today tolerate his rise to power and agressive conquests of other nations?
E) The Nazi party isn't what it used to be, and aside from some prison gangs (whose scientific knowledge is limited to making alcohol out of some oranges and a space heater) and pretty much is no longer a threat to society (unless your La Ounda or BGA).

That fact that somebody read this point and thought, "Hmmm. . . good point", makes me ashamed to be a member of this message board.

You neglected to mention that it was also a "slippery slope" argument, which is fallacious.  Each "step" on the "slippery slope" is a separate thing which must be considered and debated.  Just because one thing happens doesn't necessitate that they all happen.

By groff's logic we should just let him die if he has a massive coronary that modern non-natural medicine can save you from.   Or what about if you are diagnosed with severe diabetes only correctable by insulin injections, those aren't natural.  Or what about if you're diagnosed with cancer, and it's been caught early, should we just watch as you deteriorate knowing that it would have been possible to save your life.

I listened to a professor specialises in things like cloning and such (I'm sure there's a name for it) & his rule for whether an animal should be cloned & their species resurrected or not, is the influence that humans had on their demise. If a species became extinct due to human interference, then we should do all we can to ressurect them, but if a species dies out from natural reasons then so be it.

If you do clone Hitler, would he still have the thoughts & views as the original model, or would the clone be like a blank piece of paper for thoughts & views. Cause you might be able to clone Hitler & have him as a spokesperson for Jewish rights, just like Mel Brooks or Sammi Davis Jnr.  :thumb: Or he could just be a douchebag & post crap on some motorcycle forum.

I'm all for bringing one back.  There are so many questions we could answer from a living specimen about their diets and what not...not really their social behavior or anything but still.  Same with dinosaurs...especially the late cretaceous badasses.  No it wouldn't be Jurassic Park because it would require something more than a complete idiot to pull it off.  What kind of genius builds a facility full of the deadliest creatures to ever the world see and makes it so that, in the event of a problem that allows all of these creatures to roam freely, you would have to run 500yds through dense forest and open land just to turn the power back on?  Absolutely moronic.

my concern is who would over see this? us? the politicians...i say that being one.   honestly we could screw up most anything not by our own doing but by committee

Isn't his "rule" a little self-canceling?  Mankind was a natural plague upon this world.  We didn't come from outer space after evolving on another world capable of adequately dealing with our existence...Mother Nature allowed us to happen.  Subsequently, isn't our effect on the environment allowed by Mother Nature?

We are part of our environments and our effect on other life here is just as natural as a giant rock falling from the heavens and killing everything.

This whole retarded Hitler argument has just been a variation of the old nature-vs-nurture argument, but Bubba was the first one to bring that out. Hitler's childhood and young adult experiences are what made him as anti-semetic as he was, I very deeply doubt that he was born with it. I am happy with my beliefs but I also acknowledge that if I had been raised by different people that I likely could have ended up with different beliefs. My political outlook is a result of my experiences, and had I been raised by Rush Limbaugh I expect that I would be running around hating everyone who wasn't white, male, and protestant.

Getting back to The Mammoth, I'm all for bringing one back or creating a new one. I'm sure scientists will learn from it, and as long as we don't end up wasting buttloads of money to try to reintroduce the species I think it would help us understand nature and the past better.

The most beneficial use of this ability would be to create specimens to study so as to learn more about the minute details of our earths history.

mak, i think you stopped considering that argument a little bit too early. yes, mother nature let us evolve to what we are today, but she also let us evolve to the point where we can problem solve and create and cover our unwanted footprints. she even let us evolve to such a level of consiousness that we can debate the morals of our actions. not proving anything, just following your logic.

i personally am on the fence about it. it'd be cool to see, great to study, but why study them? they no longer exist, why do need to study it?

spc

Because man has an inherent thirst for knowledge of every facet of the world around him.  This includes the history of the world around him and the plants/animals that existed during said history.

Nature allowed us to become what we are.  Regardless of our intelligence, our effect on our environment is still a product of nature's will.

We can learn more about why the specific species' died off and why their evolved decedents changed into what they are.

meh, as long as i don't have to do it it doesn't bother me, and i don't think it really effects me. unless they're putting them in my back yard, which will only be cool on the condition i don't have to pay for them or clean up after them or anything, i just get to ride them and give them treats. and have them step on my crazy neighbor....

You sure about that?  Are you saying that we're not born with our political beliefs but that they are . . . gasp. . . learned?  This is brilliant.  You sure Bubba was the first one to point this out?

I think it is clear that I don't belong in an argument like this.  My efforts are wasted.

Just think about it...  If they could modify your DNA, re-inject it, and actually have it replicate with the new code....  They could cure ugly and stupid.   :icon_mrgreen:

I agree that would help alot of the population but some people are really f%$king stupid
