Squeaky engine noise

Hello all.
Recently (the last year or so) my 2005 GS500F has been making a squeaky noise from the engine.
It sounds like the noise a cricket would make, and it follows the engine revs, so the frequency increases.
Obviously when I get up to speed 50 km/h and over, it gets drowned out by wind noise and other engine noise, but it's still there.

I recently serviced it, about 3 weeks ago, but it's been there for alot alot longer time than that, and engine oil has never been a problem.

Does anybody have any clue on what it might be? As far as I can tell it's coming from the left side (chain side of the engine) and it only happens when the engine is warm (it's not coming from the chain though because the engine makes the sound all the time, so it must be some internal component).
Is this something I should be worried about? And I would really like to get rid of that sound.  :dunno_white:
Hope somebody can help :)

There was a problem with the cam shafts making noise on the left side, lack of a washer. Not familiar what years were affected and the may have been a service notice or recall issued. This info has been posted many times, so this may be a place to start looking.
Common sense in not very common.

I have a 2006 with 10k miles, and I posted a similar question about a month ago. No one seemed to know what it was.

Not sure if it's the same sound your hearing, but the best way I could describe my noise is that it seems like a cross between crickets and the slight sound of two keys jingling against one another -or a washer vibrating on a loose bolt. It's a faint noise, but definitely there. Seems to be coming from the front of the engine, maybe under the tank.  I spent hours trying to locate it,  but never found the cause.

I know others have reported a similar noise on their GS, and My Bike is running awesome!  :thumb:   So, I guess it's just one of those GS noises.   :dunno_white:

Yeah I saw your post but I made a new one because nobody seemed to reply to yours. :dunno_white:
But I have heard various GS's ride around and none of them made that noise, I don't think it's supposed to make that noise, at least it didn't when it was new.

I'm sure it's something inside the engine, because the noise frequensy increases with the engine revs, so it has to come from some rotating parts inside the engine, I'm thinking, maybe the clutch or stator.
:dunno_white:

But my bike is also running great, I would just like to get rid of that noise because it's starting to annoy me.  ;)

I had this EXACT same noise and I was wondering if I should take it into the shop. I knew I could hear it with my helmet on but it was fairly faint. So basically it's just the cams? I don't want to ride around with a squeaky cricket bike!

If anyone decides to take their bike to the shop to find out what the noise is, please post what the squeak was.
Thanks!

Hi all.

Joined the forum just to post this!

I don't have my GS any more (a brand new UK spec K5 "E") but I had this "cricket" noise which started after the bike had covered about 300 miles. Was OK cold but as soon as the engine warmed up, there it was - audible from idle to about 3,000RPM

My local stealership said it was the PAIR valves (second air valves?) chirping away and nothing to worry about, a common problem they said. Apparently they are reed valves so it sounds a reasonable explanation to me, if the reeds vibrate a bit they could make that annoying squeak.

Just thrash your GS then you won't hear it :icon_lol:

Anyway, don't shoot the messenger if you think it's a crap explanation!

Even though I don't have the GS I still follow the forum - good fun.

Good luck everybody.

Ian.
