Being a fan of Harry Potter is a victimless crime.  While I've never owned or read a single one of these books, I respect people's right to do so and appreciate that those books did one thing very, very important thing: they pulled an entire generation of shiftless brats away from their text messages and video games and turned the on to reading. Can you name another series of books in the last 32 years that did the same?  So next time you decide to bash Harry Potter, take a moment to reflect on the fact that the world is without a doubt a better place for having met him.  And then STFU!!!!

+1 .........kinda................
If these kids would get off their f%$king asses and go outside instead of spending 18 hours a day playing f%$king video games and reading f%$king dumbed down fantasy novels, maybe the good ol USA wouldn't be the most obese country in the world.   There's no f%$king excuse for 10-12 year olds that weigh in excess of 200lbs.

Little kids is fine, and I agree, did a great thing, but 20 to 30 somethings sitting outside for a week to buy the book for thier own prusing??? now there is something wrong with that

People who think the Harry Potter books are "dumbed down" haven't read them.  The first book was catered to kids 12 and under...but the last book is catered to those same kids (some of whom aren't really "kids" anymore).  I think they're excellently written, though I haven't read any of the last three, or four now...I'll wait until I can get the entire series in front of me and read them all.

What I think is lame is the movies.  The first few movies were great tellings of the book...but the books keep getting longer and the last movie was only a hair over two hours long and mostly just a preview for the next movie.

And it's important to know that there's fans of everything.  You know how many people were standing over their checkbooks, check already made out, itchy hand waiting to sign the damn thing over, weeks in advance to get a 1098?

According the the American Medical Association guidlines, you're obese.    But you're right in a way.  But I think reading at a young age is so important for mental development.  That can't be stated enough.

Besides, I like the movies.

A. They are dumbed down in comparison to many 'real' novels.   When I was 12, I was reading and comprehending 'The Divine Comedy'.   Are you telling me the 'Hairy Pothead' novels compare??  Or, even more appropriately, do you believe that the Harry Potter novels can hold a candle to the unabridged LoTR books??
B. You don't experience life through a book.  You do, however, experience life on the $20k motorcycle you've been dreaming about.

Jake:   According to the US Army, I'm within healthy parameters.  The American Medical Association Guidelines use a BMI which does not account for muscle mass appropriately.  These guidelines were adapted for the majority of people so as to allow the masses to evaluate themselves easily, without having to take multiple measurements and work them through a spreadsheet.

But, you are right.  Reading is an important mental stimulation for developing children.

I can not agree more (I'm in the book business, I need people to read so I can stay employed  :icon_lol: ). I am just not a big fan of Harry Potter, I think there are many more well written books that deserve much more adoration. I would take a  Roald Dahl book over Harry Potter any day- that was imagination, wit and good writing.

Actully I stepped away from my very successful Job as An Insurance Broker. I just think if you have time to spend a week sitting outside a building, not working for an fing book, you need to get a life.  its a book, the endings not going to change, the beginning and middle will probably stay the same as well.  Ive never understood doing this, for anything.  I just put in an order for a 2008 Saturn Sky Redline im 38th "in line" but im not just sitting there doing nothing, im now back at work, earning money.

Im all for the mental stimulation for kids, and adults for that matter, and if you want to read them great but why waste so much of your time waiting for a book to be released??? seems counterintuitive

There are a lot of "real" novels that are really well written that simply aren't worth reading to me.  I liked the first couple of Harry Potter books, but I never liked the LOTR books...despite the fact that I'm a huge fan of Lewis and all of Tolkein's other cronies.  I just don't like Tolkein's style, but Feist, who based all of his novels very strongly on Tolkein's world, has a completely different style that I find far more enjoyable.  It's all a person's taste.  I know people who think Eragon was the shaZam! but Tolkein and Feist and Lewis etc are all worthless.

I would personally never stand in line to get a book...maybe to get a book signed, but not the actual book.  I also wouoldn't stand in line for anything other than a free bike.  I stood in line to test drive an E90 M3 but only because it was charitable...breast cancer thing, only way I could mentally justify waiting in line for something so mundane.  I won't even stand in line to get a urinal.
