do the tank, tail, and seat mount up as well?

i imagine there may be a bit of hardware difference, but im wondering if the whole package would go on.

i'll get some up close pics of the one at work so we can all take a look

That would be why it would be a little "tighter".  Air-cooled blocks are a little loose by nature because they see a much wider range of temperatures and all the different components need to be able to expand and contract a lot more.  That little bitty cooler may have made it possible to make the tolerances a bit tighter, which could help put down an extra pony or two.

Carbs changed in '01...

The muffler has different part numbers, pre '01 and post '01.. but to my knowledge, never actually changed.

Edited because I wrote '02 instead of '01

i thought the F exhaust was higher to clear the fairing...or is that just aftermarket systems?

here are the difference i have found on older gs and newest gs. the older ones have more hp but less aceleration bc of the carbs the older ones have 2 stage jetts low and hi rpm's and newst have 3 stage of jets low mid and hi so newest one have less hp 2or 3 only but accelerate more quickly bc the carb jets.

this is was i read, no personal confirmation !!
