Because of one thing and another I have only managed to put about 2000 miles on my GS500 in the last year. Is it worth getting it serviced because its been over a year and would I be fine to leave it until about 4000 miles?

I had the same thing happen to me, I let mine go to 4000. And didn't have any problems at all. Its up to you though, if you feel more comfortable having it serviced go for it.

Well, normally you get your first service at 1000 then at 5000 (KMs that is).  I wouldnt wait to 4000 for my first service but it would be fine for your second. 

That new oil wouldnt be very clean.

Sorry should have said its a 2003 bike, bought last year by me with 4000 miles and had just got serviced.
