don't you realize that all this fear is just a way to justify spending trillions on unnecessary defense and so called security?  more people die from drinking bad water than die from so called terrorists attacks.  you can not live your life locking yourself in a cage.  i am not saying to live your life lackadaisical with no thought on security but this has gone way too overboard and it is time to stop the non sense.

so why are they spending the other 20 hours of the day having high security? Seems like a waste of time then...

Please describe one of these "so called" terroists attacks?  Were some of these terrorist attacks in fact something else?  Do you think that we should just forget about all this "so called" security?  Please, tell us what you mean when you write "so called" terrorist attacks and "so called" security.  Maybe your talking about the "so called" terroist attack where some random guys flew "so called" jet planes into a "so called" building or two.  Or maybe where some "so called" terrorists blew up some "so called" subways trains in London.

On fox news a year or so ago Shep Smith said: Not direct quote:

Ok, in 01 we had a horrible Terrorist attack we increased airport security to keep it from happening again... the review 6 years later.... Its working!!! No terrorist attacks in 6 years

What is America not seeing....

For over 6 years before 9-11 there had been no attacks and no major problems WITH NO ADDED SECURITY ???

It think that, more than anything the security additions; while not a bad thing are a bit overboard. Anyone could still walk out, onto the tarmack at any small airport hop in a small plane and fly it into a building. If someone wants to harm US citizens they will find a way.

The "War on Terror" is just like the "War on Drugs" you can never EVER win  O0

Yawn...  Airport security is for show...  It only makes stupid people feel safe and really accomplishes nothing.

So...  How dangerous is a lighter?  Not THAT dangerous, but you can't bring them on.  How many people do you think carry a lighter on every flight they take?

How about a book of matched?  One match alone is no big deal, but with lots of matches compressed together, you can make a small bomb.......  How many books of matches can you fit in your pocket without them being noticed?  How many books of matches can you cram in your carry-on without them being noticed?

If you travel enough, you'll quickly realize that every airport has some different rule that's SO important...  And they're all total bull shaZam!.  The entire "security" process is a pointless waste of time and money.  Every time they make it "more secure" we lose a little time and a little freedom, and someone still finds some way to try something else.

Okay then.  Please tell me how airport security takes away any of your freedom?  Your right to privacy, while secured by several amendments to the Constitution, isn't absolute.  Outside of that, what freedom have you lost?

They should take away all air port security and make play grounds with the money.  Homeland security should be ablolished and the money there used to pay health care.

Why we are at it, the police force should be abolished and we can use that money to fund schools.

You guys are pissed because you have to wait in line for a extra 15 t0 20 min?   :dunno_white:  I can affored to wait that long so I feel safer boarding my plane.  And like it said it wasn't all airports just that one.

Sure you're safer.  There is no way to measure the amount of safety you are afforded by every day airport security efforts.  To think otherwise is foolish.  Do you honestly think that airport security doesn't make you any safer?  That is just silly and you know it.

Airport security is a necessary intrusion.  However, a lot of what TSA is doing now is pointless.  Cases in point:

1.  Lighters, beginning August 4, can now be carried on again.  They were too dangerous to go on board but now they're not?  The real story is how much the TSA was paying to dispose of the millions of lighters they confiscated.  They were having to dispose of them as hazardous waste and it was costing millions.
2.  I had a penknife with a 1.5" blade confiscated (it was in a recess of my backpack and I didn't even know it was still in there), but scissors with up to a 4" blade can go on.  Do I feel safer because of that?
3.  Everyone must take off their shoes.  In the first few months of this policy, there were no signs.  If you didn't voluntarily take off your shoes, you were put in the search line.  Just tell people what they have to do.
4.  Laptops must go through separately from the laptop case.  Why?  X-rays show whats in the case with or without the laptop.
etc. etc.

It's mostly show to keep people fearful so they will buy whatever absurdity is next perpetrated on them in the name of "War on Terror."  It's working well so far.

Generally, they make you turn your laptop on (just to show that it is real).  This is easier/faster if it isn't in the case.

I know you're bummed about the pen knife, but it is a knife.  You can't take a knife on a plane.  Whether you know it is there or not.  Not knowing it was there should be no reason to let you keep it.  You can do plenty of damage with such a knife.  Maybe 4" scissors are more dangrous, but that doesn't mean you should be able to take a knife on a plane.

And just so I get this straight, we are bitching about airport security being too much or too little?

Too pointless...

Just baby steps...  One little step at a time...  One little inconvenience for "safety."  One more little change...  Just wear this little patch...  Just move to this other part of town...  One by one.......  One by one.

I agree with everything you have said in this topic, Jake. I did start this out just to basically say that why would an airport have 20 hours of high security, and then 4 hours with no security? Sounds like a complete waste of time, either you do it, or you don't, the bad guy will just wait till that 4 hour time frame.

I totally understood where you were coming from.  I don't take issue with that at all and I agree that there should be 24 hour security.

I take issue with the following statements:

So called terrorist attacks.
So called security.
Loss of personal freedom as a result of airport security.
Security measures are a waste of money.
Security measures are easy to defeat.
There has been 1 terrorist attack in 12 years, so why worry.

Sometimes I forget that this is the intenet, and I shouldn't assume that everyone here is sane.

So, you don't think that it's possible to get banned items passed security?

Jake D

Sure.  But it isn't easy.  But you're a f%$king dipshit if you think that it is easy to employ a banned item once you've bypassed security.

Describe one banned item, how you could get it through security, and how you could use it to harm the plane or passengers.

One example: If you have the appropriate resources a Kel-tec .380 can be modified to contain no metal parts.  .380 ammunition can be packed into composite casings.  You can hide it in your underwear.

Anyone heard of high tensile carbon composites???  Make great razor sharp knives.  Even in a bag they would have almost no signature in the X-ray.

There are dozens of possibilities.

We spent 2 weeks briefing on this 2 years back before G8.   No planes but very similar security procedures.
