i've had a couple of threads about HD and blue ray.  i went to best buy the other day and got a up-convert dvd player with hdmi cable for 60 bucks.  the picture difference, though not as great as HD, is stunning.  going from progressive scan and a coax cable to up-convert with hdmi on my HD tv was very impressive.  i am just dying at the hd war because i want to get an hd player, but having been burned by beta in the early 80's i am cautious.  my hope is that HD DVD will win over blue ray but there is no sign either way really.  i know that block buster is doing blue ray but that means nothing really, i have not rented from them in years.  sony ps3 games are no where to be seen so that idea of an all is one is bust.  sony has had bad luck with new tech before, such as beta, mini discs and crap there was another one but i can't remember right now what it was.

so does anyone have a hddvd or blue ray?  so far none of my local stores are renting any hd of either form yet.

ok so to sum up,  the up-convert is a good and cheap way to tread water while you are waiting for this hd outcome to play itself out.

I don't have hd or blue yet.I'm waiting it out also.Blue ray seems to be the pick in my area.

definatly wait until one or the other wins.
if history says anything, the worse format will win because its cheaper

thats why sony always wins the professional format wars, but loses the consumer ones. they focus too much on quality.

I have a  xbox 360, and i bought a HD dvd attachment ,the HD dvd drive , the fact its not True HD ,where as the New Xbox 360 elite has a HDMI output for True HD , i like what i got now

Theres a lesser extent wiitch is either 1080 I or 720P

the xbox 360 says it can run true HD . but the upgrade with the HDMI is the only one that can , the ps3 cant either

1080p as "true hd" is marketing nonsense.
there is no 1080p broadcast spec.
and you can represent any "1080p" signal as interlaced, and it will not change at all.

Its the Highest It Will Run . im sure if i looked into it ,id find some back up , i was speaking to a friend about it .

1080p is no higher resolution then 1080i

its just progressive scan, instead of interlaced.  funny thing about that is any progressive scan image can be  interlaced with no loss of quality.
thats why there is no standard for broadcasting 1080p.

upconvert gives you 720 off a reg dvd.  i get 1080 from my satellite and hddvd and blue ray with hdmi also have 1080 so jay you are right.  i have no idea what the other fellow is talking about.  but here in america and on satellite we do have the 1080.  i can actually see the differance when i switch from digital 720, to dvd 720 to my hd stations a BIG differance.

You have 1080i from satellite, not 1080p.
they are both 1920x1080, the difference is in how the picture is displayed.

progressive scan displays the entire frame in one pass.
Interlacing displays every other line, then goes back and displays the even lines, ie it displays line 1 then 3 then 5, until the end, then goes back and displays line 2,4,6 etc
these half frames are called fields. in 1080i you get 60 fields a second, while in 1080p you get 30 full frames per second.

so to make a 1080p source interlaced, you just split each full frame in half by every other line. when the display puts it back together, it display exactly the same.

720p is lower resolution then 1080i (1280x720 instead of 1920x1080), but runs at a full 60 progressive frames per second. the advantage with 720 is motion is smoother, so its great for things like live sports. ESPN is all 720, as is fox.

AS for the source of the 1080P  its the xbox 360 Elite , the Only console to be able to run at that Res

my only point is that a console outputting 1080p is no difference then a console outputting 1080i.
they use it as a marketing term, but it doesnt really mean anything (when compared to 1080i)
