Anyone in that area ??? every one safe ???

Why did it happen anyone want to guess.

My guess - welding ... its brittle and causes micro cracks etc with shock loads these things get.
That is why used to have them bolted in the old days, then went to riveted cos bolts needed tightening regularly, and finally welding.
Bolts are labor intensive and will need tightening and replacing often, but they usually leave the underlying structure un touched.
Cool.

Not to mention that bolted connections can give a little and rotate somewhat freely, which reduces bending moments on the structure.  BTW, for an interesting story, google "liberty ships" and "welded".

I am alive, close enough to see dust rising and hear the ambulances, but not close enough to actually see the bridge collapse.

Its a real bummer for the people who lost there lives, and to the politicians and MNDOT for being douchebags. Only 5 people and 8 missing have to die for you to inspect bridges that 100,000 people cross a day. Yeah government!!!
And this is why I am opposed to govt controlled healthcare :thumb:

I don't know about the rest of the nation but its on every local station all the time here and is starting to get a little over played.

finally the navy divers are there, police and fire divers are not trained and unable to do the work required.

when their basic dive training is a year long, 20 hour days then i will consider them trained.  many are out of shape, the training is minimal compared to the navy and their experience is not even on the radar compared with navy divers.  i have trained with or worked with military, fire, police, commercial etc divers all over the world.  only the navy ones are fully trained, experienced and prepared to handle such disasters

doesn't matter if they are a little less trained, at leased they were there to help as much as they could. I'm sure that people trapped aren't saying "who the hell is this idiot fire diver?! get lost, i want navy divers to save me!". you should be saying why did it take so long for the navy divers to get there, not the police and fire divers are crap.  :dunno_white: just my opinion.

Frankie:
1:  2 of our local SD's dive team are SEAL qualified...............and we're landlocked..........except for the Suwannee which is at it's most narrow in our county.
2:  SWAT doesn't do anywhere near the amount of training that even the most basic of Infantry soldiers completes, yet nobody says ' Oh they should have called in the Infantry' when the SWAT boys do a drug bust  ( Yes there are shaZam! tons of em down here......we average 1 a week)   In Fact,  Our SWAT team is all volunteer and only trains for a week before being duty qualified.......

Actually the local divers are trained for coldwater and body recover in murky waters. Since a majority of the time they are fishing people out the lakes. Throw debris in there and swift currents and get tricky, most of the local divers had been working 16hrs days and are pretty fried

I'm OK too.  My condolences to the families affected; but I don't think anyone would have guessed that the death toll would be as low as it was.
You cannot escape our master plan!
