an update and mod ideas for my '90

 I had the bike towed to a dealer yesterday to get the busted oil filter cover bolts tapped out after I over-torqued them and hopefully will have the bike back before this weekend.  Thanks to nastynate, I replaced the right throttle assembly (which previously had an old doorbell button as a starter button) and will be replacing the front master cylinder soon.  I still need to replace the gauge cluster and have a bid or two on some of those on ebay.  If anoyne has an extra plz PM me.

In the future I would like to get a new headlight and taillight, install a 15t spocket, install mini front and rear turn signals and repaint the tank and fenders bright red.  If you guys could, please give me some suggestions on how to approach the head and taillights.  I'm new to bikes and this stuff in general so something easy requiring no fabrication would be a must.  I've searched the boards and have a few ideas but would like your input.

i got a stock GS500 recently too.
rejetting makes all the difference in the world from what i;ve heard.  stock in the US the GS is positively starved and rejetting really wakes it up.

no need to rejet right away.  when the time comes, you'll know it.  However, +1 to what naz says.  Check the wiki for ideas on mods.  There are tons for looks/feel and performance.

I have pretty much the same bike, mine is a 92.  I had to replace the front cyl and it was a breeze.  I re-did everything except for re-jetting it.  Fuel lines, carb lines, adjusted the clutch etc etc...Sorry I can't be of more help on the aesthetics as I never really looked into it.  I did replace my mirrors (found some on ebay for cheap) as the previous owner broke one.  This thing is a breeze to work on (I work on my VW and have built my motor, so I have average mechanical skills).  This thing so far has been really easy, I just don't want to dive into the carb as I am from the FI era :P

I looked over the steps to rejet and I don't know if I'll do that right away or not.  I do think I'm going to clean my carbs soon and I guess I should just kill 2 birds with one stone and do them both at the same time.  But I'm still a noob to riding and don't want to hurt myself by increasing the power too much too soon.

What kind of headlight? Duals? ....mmmmmm

If you have seen my 2 street bikes, you will see that I am partial to them. One set is from www.Aztec8.com and the other is from Flyncycle on ebay. I like the Flyncycle headlights better. They have connectors for a direct plug-in and a semi-gloss finish. The Aztec8 lights come with a splice connector and are flat black. I replaced the connectors to be a direct plug-in.

Rejetting won't increase power much but will make it more rideable. As long as you're cleaning the carbs go ahead and do it.

Thanks guys.  Dgyver, I dig your duals and would like to get some just like those FNCs, but at that price they will have to wait.

I hate those mirrors and will hopefully replace them soon.

Check SVRider.com at times. I have seen used duals sell for $60-80

I have silver ones and I think they look cool and they also give me a really good view behind me.

I got my bike back today and everything is in good shape.  I rode it home and around town tonight and am loving it.  I get a little sputtering every once in a while and I'm not exactly sure why so I think I may clean the carbs and rejet sooner rather than later.  I've put a little of that fuel injector and carb cleaner in the fuel tank so hopefully that will help.  I hope to get out some tomorrow and this weekend and get moving a little quicker.  I've only been on roads that allow me to get to about 50 so far.  Thanks for your help so far guys.

I over-torqued them and broke them off in the engine casing.  Stupid...I know.
