In a few weeks I'm going on a weekend trip that will be about 4-500 miles round trip.  Being fairly new to motorcycling, I'm not sure what to take.  I plan on bringing extra oil, water, and all my gear.  What else should I pack?

Thanks

Make sure your chain tension is correct and your chain is lubed before you leave and you can "forget" to bring the 3/8" drive ratchet at home.  I like bringing a small, cheap set of allens in the sizes that the bike uses, as well as a small assortment of sockets that could be put to use.  I figure if I can't fix it with that and/or duct tape or zip ties, I shouldn't be riding the bike anyway.

Go over it real well before you leave and check that all of the bolts/nuts you have access to are securely tightened down and you'll be fine.  500 miles ain't nothing, except to your rear-end!

Last weekend I did 385 miles in one day...made for one hell of a sore bottom. Otherwise...It was an awesome trip.  :) Oh yeah, and the horrible number of bugs that covered my bike and me when I was returning home after dark.

You'll get better value weight per drink if you take bourbon rather than beer!! :icon_razz:

i just got back from a 2 day, 850 mile trip down to key west and back. my advice is to stop and take plenty of breaks, your body will thank you and the ride will be much more enjoyable.

Please see my post for cross country trip Oxnard Ca. to Buffalo N.Y.  I would get a tank bag, makes it easy to carry your daily items.  Take suntan lotion for arms and face.  Take a carmel water pack wihich carries about 32 oz water.  If your taking luggage, get a motorcycle suitcase, easy to strap on.  Cruise control makes it nice to give your right hand a break.  Sheepskin seat cover seems to save your butt.
