I've got a friend who has a Kat with a streched swingarm polished and fully polished wheels. He is going to make a 4 wheeler out of it. I'm getting the forks and shock for personal use. What else is worth getting?

make sure you get the triples,top plate,handle bars,brake disc,calipers,and master cylinder.then call me.you'll also need a gauge plate which i can help fab and head light mount.check ebay for a universal head light mounts for 41 mm forks.I have a set of spacers for sale and I'll bring them up.dgyver and i are becoming profeicent at building katana forks.

I tossed the stock GS headlight ear holders to the muffler shop and had him bump it 2mm. easy, except 1-2 of them broke. Not a prob, had them welded shut. OK then they had ugly ass weld on it, No problem, I ground it. OK then, I put the GS stock grommets on it, lubed the crap out of it, and slid it on the Kat forks. Bingo, worked great, but you space the upper and lower triples (AKA no grind and weld method) they will have 3/4 to 1 inch of slop where they will bounce up and down (while with the other "headlights" bouncing is good, its definetly bad if its headlight ... ).
I also sliced off the guage ears off the GS triple and welded it on the Kat triple.
I also milled 1/4 inch into the kat top triple, cut off 1/4 inch off the top of the Kat stem and slapped it all together with no spacers.

UMMM OK.My way requires no welding or machining.What ever's easy.

Ben, it may be easier to stuff them with spacers and a guage plate and forget the headlight brackets those things are truly atrocious looking unless you fork over $40+ ... welding and spreading is all done at a muffler shop, walk in, and walk out in 5 mins. Then dremel tool and you're good, paint and its un detectable.
But guages and all the rest on the front end fit without any detectable "modded at home look", like it came from the factory that way.
I ground and welded the stem on the bottom to lose the spacer on the bottom, milled and shortened the top to have no spacer on top and have no spacers under the lock mechanism, welded dash grommet ears off a 90 on the triple and they take the stock grommets and the headlight brackets and turnsignals all fit the stock GS bracket ears spread 2mm. BTW, stock GS headlight ears fit a Katana fork without a grommet. That grommet is what adds 2mm.
The spacers need a lathe, (atleast ken used one) an extra adjustment collar and no clue what your guage plate is like. This stuff I did is very generic. Only special tool is an end mill which you can use in a drill press. Angle grinder, sawzall, welder, drill press and pipe spreader and of course welder for steel and aluminum.

could I not just press the stock stem out of the GS and into the Kantana tripples. I pushed on the kat front end and it didn't bottom out  :thumb:.
I'll probably sell the wheels as a set becuase they are fully polished they are curved spoked so I think they are pre 98.

I will need one rotor and caliper for the right side, so if any one has one let me know.

yes you can press them out,switch them.the gs stem is just a tad smaller.some people have sent the stem to a machine shop and had the end knurled.

The GS stem is a direct fit in the Kat. Knurling is only required with an aluminum triple clamp.
Common sense in not very common.

OK the GS and katana stems I have come across have all been welded in. I have had to grind them all out. Putting a GS stem in the kat triple is a great option if you got a GS stem with that retaining ring in it and a Kat one with the same setup. Once you grind it, it is a different length, shorter ... much shorter. The stem is much less reliable to weld into the hole if its sunken. Hence we had to have the stem poking out the under side ~1/4 inch to weld. Ken (werase643) on the last 2 he did, cut a series of slots and opened it up like a flower. Then he welded it. Its just an added insurance. So I'd not count on being able to press anything out and press in.
The top is also somehting you may have to cut and mill as well as turn the top bearing slide in area to get it all perfect.
I just go a wee bit farther and get the GS guage ears on the kat triple so you can use the stock grommets and fit it, and the headlight ears are just the last straw. Better than $40 for the damn generic ears.

My lower clamp is Alum. and pressed in, I'm not sure about the Kat but I'll let ya guys know.

On a GS and on a kat, lower triple is some cheesy ass crap with tons of random metals in it, with majority being iron. Similar to cast iron I'd say, with aluminum as majority impurity.

97 Kat stems are pressed and 04+ GS stems are pressed. I believe there are earlier than 04 GS stems that are pressed but I cannot confirm.
GS and Kat triple clamp are not aluminum, like SS said some kind of steel.
Common sense in not very common.
