I sold out --- buying a YAM

Went to check out a Yam i found on CL today - '93 FZR 1000, polished frame, LED tail, SS brake lines, but mostly stock and a little weathered - $1,500.  I figured it'd be a good segue to an R1 or a GSXR in the future.... for now, I guess I'll be tearing apart some carbs for cleaning.... a little more complicated than my last 2 GS500's I'm sure :)

You doubled the displacement but kept the basic technology.  Nice.

Don't know your riding history, but every bike has its own personality.  Get to know your new ride incrementally.  Get used to the different weight, the reaction of the clutch, brakes, throttle, etc.  You probably knew that, but worth emphasizing.

5 valve water cooled ... not even close to same tech. Not to mention Aluminum frame, and Exup. BTW, 26K valve adjustments, a pure myth. You'd have to check them in 1/2 that time ...  :laugh:

Hey that's an awesome ride. If I could find one with less than 40,000 miles on it I'd buy it !

Now then, get on with posting the pictures of your new steed.

yeah 4 carbs (yay for syncing). 26k miles and a possible leaking fork seal.... but i'm up for the challenge this fall.  I was also recently offered to be given a free old GSX or GS 600, not sure what it is yet but apparently a friend of the family bought it for $1 @ police auction and its been in his basement ever since.  I never even knew I was a mechanic.... :dunno_white: luv it!

The auctioned bike is probably a Katana.  If nothing else, take the FE and shock and rear wheel off it and you'll make a killing here.

The FZR series is awesome, so I for one do not consider it a sellout.  I have a FZR600 and it rocks.  It's a little more temperamental than my GS, but shares a lot in common in terms of being plentiful in the eBay/parts department, having significant modding potential, and having a great online community (fzrarchives.com).

In fact, if you haven't already, you should head over there and browse the forum for problems you might expect.  The early FZRs had a number of fidgety issues, such as failure-prone voltage regulators and ignition coils, with simple solutions.  (a voltage regulator from an R6 and coils from a Ford Escort!)

Don't ever do a wheelie.  The clutch won't handle more than a few.  Ever.  It's way too underbuilt for the 600, and it's the same clutch in the 1000.  (An exploded clutch is how I got my ride for waaay below book, but I spent some time fishing clutch bits out of other parts of the engine.)

I consider my FZR (for now) my "last" upgrade in the high RPM sportbike category (because I will never consider an R1 or GSXR).  I'm going to upgrade the suspension and call it done and enjoy it on street and track.  Unless the engine or transmission craps out, in which case I'll look for a YZF600 engine to replace it.  (Another common and simple mod.)

The only other bike I'd consider buying right now is a SV650, for its reportedly street-friendly torque.

But man... FZR?  Good choice.

Hmmmmm  FZR.........there's a kit for the 600 to make it look like an R1.......couldn't be that hard to make it work on the 1000........that would look sharp :thumb:

I actually like that the FZR looks kind of vintage.  I wouldn't want it to look like an R1.  Just like I don't want my GS to look like a GSXR.

An R1 doesn't look special in any way.  It's like "Hi, I'm a generic superbike," which is super, after all.  But not special.

Bwahaha... I'm retarded.  I read that as FI, and I was like I don't know how you plan on selling the fuel injection, but whatever.

I agree, aside from a few selected cases, leaving bikes era-specific works best.  You wouldn't graft 1098 plastics onto a '95 916 would you?

things are going well with the bike - it looks better in my driveway than it did in this fella's garage.... the polished frame is a really nice touch.  I drained the fuel and loaded it back up with high octane and half a can of Sea Foam, and the bike started right up - but sputters and clunks like a mofo -- hopefully a bit of carb tinkering will straighten it right out.  Although the bike is about 80lbs heavier than a GS, it feels very nicely balanced and sits a bit lower as well.  the full-fairing look is new for me, but I definitely like it already!
