hey guys new to the gs500f i am approchiing my first oil chage and wanted to know what grade and brand do you guys use.  The manual reccommends 10w-40 and it can't be energy conserving.  Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Factory knows best. They made the thing. You will be fine whatever brand you use. I have always used Amsoil, but I need to start spending less on my oil, so no more synthetic for me. As for different weights, you can go to 20-50 if you like, it al depends on your weather and you riding habbits. Try searching for this, you should find plenty of info.

I don't see any reason to change from 10W-40.  Use Valvoline Motorcycle Blend.  One could step up to synthetic, but I figure an oil & filter change every 1500-2000 miles is still cheaper and effective.
