I bought this 2000 gs of an elderly man who couldn't figure out why it was spewing oil every time he started it. He said he bought it off a kid who rejetted it and it was running poorly.
I quickly found out it was spewing oil because It was missing two of the six bolts on the cylinder head cover and the others were loose. Also the carbs were never rejetted, they were stock inside.

Now that its put back together I can get it to idle beautifully but when I give it the slightest bit of gas it dies immediately. Ive searched but cant figure out what to do. Can you help?

Try doing a search for your problem, its usually pretty common when you get into the carbs and you forget something.
1.  ensure that the tank mounted petcock is fully open
2. the vacuum line to the frame mounted petcock is connected
3. the slides are put in backwards and/or not moving or are stuck
ect ect ect

Something wrong with the carbs, you probably may to do some leg work to figure out what it is

Thanks for the reply. 1, 2, 3 of your suggestions have been checked. also I checked the compression it is great. I don't even know if it is a problem with the carbs. It looks like ive been the only one in there and all I did was clean them. Some one has definitely been in the top of the engine. Would timing or valves give me symptoms like this?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Possible spark problem. How new are the plugs? Dropping in a fresh pair will not hurt.
Common sense in not very common.

The plugs are new. I guess I'll take the carbs off tomorrow to double check every thing. Thanx for the reply.

The carbs look fine. could timing or valves let it run great at idle and die when I give it gas? are these symptoms of to much air or gas?

it for sure would not be a bad idea to check valves, to check the timing you are going to need a degree wheel and some other stuff.  One thing that I am thinking of right away is how the choke effects it. If you let it idle and give it full choke what happens?
