Here are a few shots today of a bit of progress.  I finally got my crazy exhaust on when I figured out that they threw in extra pieces to me and it all made sense on how it goes together.  I thought I was an idiot at first  :cookoo: but decided it was them.  Random dog pic, and my wheels with a little aircraft stripper on it.  Boy does it hurt by the way getting even a little bit of that stuff on your hand.  DON'T DO IT!  Gonna try it on my tank too and see if it makes the job any easier.

^^^ This is the mirror set that I got by accident, but I got my money back in full so now I've got a smaller set of mirrors.  Those were from MAW and cost 50 bucks.  They were supposed to be a fake lanesplitter mirror.

The wife's new and first bike for her!!!

Good pics, looks like you might need a couple of sunny days to get it all back together. Looks like you already repainted your exhaust pipe, something I have to do too. Good luck I' d like to see the finished product of the rims, keep us posted.

Yeah, the rims are coming along nicely.  They are now a nice bronze color and need one more quick spray before they are done.  I'm probably going to do a clear on the rims too.  Probably not the tank and plastics though.

Good progress !

I've been wondering what black on gold would look like. Thanks for getting started on it for me ;)

I've also been considering painting my frame the darker charcoal the 98's were painted. Then, for the subframe go on and rattle can it flat black so it disappears. Here's what I have now, stock aside the mirrors:

You've got a good head start on me !

Those wheels look awsome. What kind of paint are you using and are you sure it will last?

I've wanted a flat black for a while now, but this is turning out pretty good I think.  I'm actually using a bronze wheel paint designed for wheels not to chip and ding.  It was a primerless paint that just needed to be on a rough surface sanded to 320 grit according to the bottle.  I decided to paint and see if it sticks.  No primer or anything underneath, just a really roughed up surface.  The wheel paint is about 8 bucks a can and 2 cans did both wheels fairly well.  I need one more quick coat to get a couple of thin spots but other than that its turning out great.  I don't want to get to the frame just yet because If I do it I'm going to do it a gunmetal powdercoat and I just don't want to spend more money.  That vance pipe you've got on there doesn't look very stock to me.

Yep - nothing like a sunny day ... to work on a bike in a garage?

Just joshin' ya - I get that you were doing the stripping and painting outside; it's just that the only obvious backdrop in the first few photos was the inside of the garage.  ;)

You're doing a great job ... something I'll have to look into before much longer.  The clear coat is starting to come off my tank because I've basically left the bike out in the weather for the past two years.  :nono:

yeah, next will come new fork springs and oil as well as stainless steel brake line and it'll be done for my liking.  The only thing that was botched up at all was while I was taking photos of the gas tank, I took too long inside and waited longer than the 20 minutes it takes to soften the paint up and it solidified again leaving little flecks of paint all over.  I'm either going to sand them off, or strip it again.

Ive had experience of powder coating and was fairly disappointed really. I had an old RS1 Frame from a 50cc bike i did up and had the frame shotblasted and powdercoated and it just chipped so easy. If i was doing one again i would paint. However my ZXR has a polished aluminium frame and thats soooo easy to look after. Doesn't get marked and so long as i clean it and dry it off it doesn't go dull and when i come to sell it i i will just polish it and the exhaust and it will look gorgeous.

Although parts are a fortune i just bought a new altenator cover, alternator gasket, clutch actuator cylinder and clutch gasket and it cost me £144.44, Which is what $280 about. Fortune!

thats gotta be a fun little track animal you got there.  I love small displacement bikes that just rip up the twisties.

I havn't ever taken her to the track im too scared to drop her! But yea she is mean mean animal and certinally not a beginner bike! She has seen the track before and has been setup for it, i.e had parts stripped off to lighten her up and things. But she goes like shaZam! of a shovel and up to some pretty insane speeds for a 400. Put it this way, you would be keeping up with a fair handfull of 600 sportsbikes.

Im actually selling her now

Shes had so much work done, custom refit of the old track plastics and OEM plastics, GSXR indicator mirror fabrication and aftermarket windscreen with modification. Engine work, and tuning to get her running well, New spark plugs, new tyres, micron SS full exhaust system. Not to mention the custom paint job and polished aluminium frame. Theres a couple of K's work in there if i hadn't done it myself with my dad. I mean a paint job alone your looking over a grand for something like that. Glad ive got the skills! i certinally don't have the cash! hehe.

So yea shes very old like 15 years or something, but was built with such state of the art expensive kit that its only now that some sportsbikes are getting the same stuff. So she really isn't a dated bike except slightly in the looks department but with only 35k miles and tonnes of custom work she is worth almost twice what i bought her for and it seems stupid for me to rider her and possibly break her when i stand to make money on her. So yep time for her to go. Looking for around £2k and i'd be really happy to let her go at that. Miss riding her but i will get another one sometime :)
