Hi,

Got a question. Doesn't the insurance company calculate your premium based on the whether the bike is stock or not? What happens if u go ahead and mod the bike? Will ur premium go up?

I have a cpl of mods lined up for my '01 GS - progressive springs and Factory Pro jet kit. Will this affect my insurance policy?

none of those mods effect your insurance.  Only extremely large mods will effect your insurance and theres really nothing you have to worry about with the GS other than a fairing which you don't have to get coverage for anyways.  I mean I put a completely different motor in my car and it would make my insurance go up but why even tell them.

most of the mods we do really dont cause an rise in premiums, unless those mods like jeffd's led taillights will make someone steal the bike.

I suggest get full coverage if you can afford it, i think its worth it. That reminds me i need to call Mc.Graw start a policy with them, im dumping geico after 2 yrs unless they can offer me something lower than what im paying right now.
'01 GS500. Mods: Katana Shock, Progessive Springs, BobB's V&H  Advancer Clone, JeffD's LED tail lights & LED licence plate bolt running lights, flanders superbike bars, magnet under the bike. Recent mods: Rejet with 20/62.5/145, 3 shims on needle, K&N Lunch box.

how would LED tailights make someone want to steal your bike?  As far as full coverage goes it definantly was not worth it for me with progressive.  Basic was like $270 a year where full coverage with $250 deduct was almost $2000, and jumping to $1000 deduct only loweed it like 2 or 3 hundred dollars.  I figure if my bike is stolen the min of $1700 i save in insurance a year will easily buy me a new one.

Thanx for the info guys. Now I am all set for the mods! Well, I pay 450$/year for full coverage (Dairy Land insurance).

no ins required in fla for motorcycles. not that half the cagers dont have ins anyway, let alone valid drivers permits.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

Its you Vs the pavement.....who wins today?

Often mods like fairings, aftermarket wheels etc. etc. must be reported to the insurance company (which will raise the rate) or are not covered - lack of plastic is one of the reasons the GS is cheap to insure.

Hey mostly good advice but there is a catch...
This guy modded a VW sedan into a convt... but still had a sedan title... ins co refused to pay. Also the after accident inspection dudes are really savvy in some cases... You dont want to be caught jimmying a Chopper front end on a GS and end up high siding... and trying to claim insurance... That would be a bit stupid now really... Just a word of caution before you slap on that springer 12' over front end and showing off around school... The othyer mods like pipe, jetting, K&N's, progressives etc are all considered improvements and hence they dont create much fuss over those...
Cool.
Srinath.
