I just got through installing my case guards from MC Enterprises, and lopping off my lower fairings, basically converting them to 3/4 fairings. I like the look of the 3/4 fairing. More clearance for running the dirt roads too! :icon_mrgreen:

Here's a couple thumbnails:

I'll get another pic up shortly. I'm having trouble with photobucket.

Finally!

Here's a closer view of how I trimmed the fairings:

I also have an '04. Been thinking of going naked so I could put case guards on.

Now, I might try something similar.

Looks good.

Cool. I usually don't like F's. That looks pretty nice. Did you have to cut much ?

Enjoy the look. It's like a bandit almost. :)

Hnh, looks original dude. Not bad either.

Are you still running the GS on that little muffler?

No, I didn't have to cut too much. There's a bolt that attaches the fairing to the bike about 3/4's of the way down. I cut it just below that. My bike had a couple slow speed drops from the original owner that scuffed the lower fairings, and then my son busted the lowered pretty good crossing our sidewalk.

Yep, I'm still running that little muffler. Eventually I want to buy a Yoshimura slip on. My welding don't look so great. It's not that noticable, but I know it's there.

Oh, and THANKS for the comments everyone!

good job  :thumb:
I thought about those case guards but I would like to cut a hole for them in the fairings instead of cutting off the whole bottom of the fairings. I have to think about that. You inspired me!!
Thanks!

you mean something like this? (1 min photoshop)

You know,

I had thoughts about later on, if I found a bargain on some new fairings, that I'd replace mine and just cut holes for the case guards. But me thinks there would be a slight problem:

The shifter side case guard doesn't stick out as far, and it will nearly fit underneath the fairing. Actually, I wouldn't have had to cut the notch for the shifter side fairing, because it liked about 1/16" before touching the case guard, but I notched it anyway because I was afraid it may vibrate against the case guard, and I thought it looked cooler being notched.

More than likely, you would have to cut a long slot for the lower half of the shifter side case guard, instead of a couple holes. Maybe the same for the brake side also, or at least a partial slot.

DUDE! Yeah! That's exactly what I meant.
So what do you guys think? Isn't it going to look ridiculous?
Honestly, I kinda like it... plus I can keep the fairings on  8)

I see your point. You may be right. I have to think about that. I really would like to have the case guards but I also like the plastics... I thought about frame sliders but those for GS are crap.
I'll hold the idea till next year. I can't spend more money on the bike this season...

slots would definitely be the way to go, it would be a pain to remove the fairings whit only holes. I never noticed one of the fairings stuck out more... maybe some type of spacer for that side would work

Actually, I don't think the fairing sticks out farther on one side. It's the case guards that stick out farther on the brake pedal side, than the shifter side. Due to the engine case being wider on the brake side.

Very different, original job.
Still not a fan of GS/F's, but I like your idea.
Reminds me of an SV/S or so.
Congrats!

I kinda like it highnoon even though I mostly prefer them naked, looks like the fairing on the new BMW F800ST:

Think it would look good with the SW-Motech type guards:
