I recently purchased a 2000 GS500. This is my first bike, and first time I have owned a vechicle with carbs.

THe bike has a little problem, if I try to crack the throttle open approx. 1/2 way or more, the bike will hesitate, then when i let off the throttle it will start going... If I slowly open the throttle the gas will accelerate fine.

I was trying to search for this problem on the boards, but I dont know what to search for or what most people are talkinga bout when they speak about carbs, jets, etc.

Is it easy to make this bike wheelie? will simply rolling on the throttle bring the front up? I am scared of flipping the bike, so I would like to know what NOT to do.

Also can someone point me toward a good repair manual for the gs500, i saw a clymer on this website, but with previous experiences with non-factory manuals, it doesn't seem too great to me.

thanks for any replies.  :)

i have the clymer manual is very good. It has lots of pictures and is relaticly easy to under stand, it very cheep too. The only thing i wish was different was a spiral binding so it can lay flat, but that would make it cost more!

About wheelie, yes it can wheely, no it cant with just throttle. You need to rev to like 7-8k and while your moving about 10-15mph ust drop the clutch (let go realy fast). It may or may not come up into a wheelie. If it doesnt, sit back farther on the seat. Be pepared for the quick burst of acceleration though. You need to be way back on the seat and gun it all the way over the top, but you will probably chicken out before then. If you start going over, tap the rear brake or let off throttle slowly.

About the carb thing:

My bike does roughly the same thing in every gear at around 7k-8k rpm. It feels like its hesitating. (if you have ever run low on fuel before switching to reserve, it feels like that). I just switched air filter so im thinking that may be the problem. Let me know if you figure out whats happening and i'll let you know if i figure it out also.

Good Luck, and be careful with the wheelies!
Happyness is like peeing you pants.  Everyone can see it but only you can feel its warmth.

The Clymer has been fine for me.  The pictures can be a bit small and some of the information isn't updated for my '01. Most people seem to feel it is adequate for the job. Where is comes up short, I just get on the computer and search through the archives of this forum and look at the pictures where available. (Thanks guys!  :thumb: )

If you hav $60 burning a hole and you pocket and want the real Suzuki shop manual, www.repairmanual.com sells it. I've bought from them and was happy with the transaction.

Opening throttle slow and it behaves, open it fast and it falls on its face...
If your bike has all the hoses from the air box, and has a clean air filter and clean carbs and dont have other issues like fuel flow or float level... and has a pipe/slip on on it... I'd say the slides are comming up too fast.
Cool.
