You know how they say they're 2 types of riders...those who've wrecked and those who will.  Well, I joined the former group today   I had my first wreck today.  I was riding with my gf and turning right from a stop onto a really narrow road.  well I didn't compensate for the extra weight on the bike and couldn't turn sharply enough so I went up on the median which was kinda a slight slope.  I guess I panicked for some reason I was only go about 5 mph and somehow I opened up the throttle pretty high and popped the clutch.  Needless to say anyone that says you can't pop a serious wheelie with a 16t sprocket is dead wrong.  The bike went vertical and both me and my gf fell off.

Neither one of us is hurt badly, she torqued up her knee a little bit and they think I partially dislocated my shoulder but it popped back it in.  We both got a little road rash but nothing serious.  We were both wearing helmets, riding jackets, jeans, etc so we got off pretty well.  I think the bike is fu****, but I'm not sure.  I haven't gotten a call back from the claims adjuster yet but I should by tomorrow.  I'm going to stay off bikes for a while, but I think in a few months or so I'll be ready to buy something else.

But, now I can say it with experience - RIDE SAFE!!!

Every time I see a pic of your bike I think damn, I wish mine looked like that. Sorry to hear you took a tumble. I hope your bike is still ridable with a little work. No reason to quit riding when you just learned a lesson you probably won't soon forget.

If it's any consolation, I took my -2nd- spill today. My clean bike ain't looking so clean anymore! No major damage, since I slid off the road into a bank of dirt and leaves, but my left case guard is now shot to shaZam! and the left bar-end weight is a little off-kilter.

Mine was a combo of:
-ignoring road sign indicating how sharp the turn was
-assuming entry speed was slower than it was
-LOOKING DOWN. I knew as soon as I peeked at the yellow lines that I was going to see them in much greater detail.

I finished the ride and then did it again later that day, and can guarantee those mistakes didn't happen again.

Let us know the bike status when you find out! And again I hope you don't take your planned hiatus, it just seems like lost skill you'd have to

Yeah sorry to hear you came a croppers, especially with the gf on the back, glad to hear you're both alright though. I came off about 6 weeks ago but came off lightly- hit the dirt and grass on the side of the road after a failed over take (a car came around the bend and I had to pull back in). Most of the damage was to my pride and a broken mirror holder and some scratches to the can. I was being stupid- stuck behind a van that I had to get past as I was approaching some of my favourite twisties- bad decision. I've gotta say though both driver stopped to see if I was alright which was really good.

I certainly learnt some lessons from that. Remember the destination is the aim not the ride. I was finding it easy to forget that as it was, and still is, sooooo much fun.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I'm curious about the title. "It finally happened?"....Didn't you just get your bike in August? Not to kick you when you're down, but most riders need a LOT more experience in the saddle before taking passengers.

I hope you and your gf both heal up quickly (as well as the other riders here who've posted about their get-offs).

New riders need to take it easy and slow down. It's not a race to get to the twisties, to ride two-up, or to be a veteran. It sounds as though most of these incidents are due to new riders riding above their abilities, and that's definitely one of my big concerns for new riders.

I'm not trying to bag on anyone here, and I'm not trying to sound unsympathetic. My words come from concern for new riders, so please take them in the spirit they're intended. I sincerely don't want to see any more of us getting hurt.

yeah, I think had she not been on the back I wouldn't have had the accident.  The good thing though is that we've both agreed that next time my bike is going to be for me and me alone.  Safer for both of us.

Kudos to you both for thinking this through and coming to such a mature decision.  It's a tough decision, because it's something that can be shared and enjoyed. Get comfortable on the bike yourself and then you can think about two-up in the future. Is she interested in learning to ride her own bike?  :icon_mrgreen:
