K on my Virago ... these is 2 relays. 1 is a blue relay which is side stand relay. Other is a metal relay which is starter relay.
It was doing nothing when you turn the key, like no fuel pump when you put in on and no starter when you hit start button.
I put the blue relay in place of that gold one and the bike cranks over wven when the key is in off.
Now here is the kicker. I swapped that metal relay with a relay I yanked off the GS. It fit well and looked like it belonged, but its acting much like the gold one did. Its not running the fuel pump or the starter when hitting the start button. I believe its the kickstand relay for the GS.
So anyone know if relays are all the same, or if there is a huge diff between them.
Cool.

I wouldnt be mixing multiple brand's parts.   start looking for wiring diagrams, and break out the multimeter, it sounds like you have a short somewhere that needs to be addressed.

dont just go swapping parts,  it only masks the real problem.  do it right and its a lot less trouble and expense to do.

Bwaaa ...
Fine, Lets call that plan B.
I Already dealt with this crap a few months ago. The relay had a dead short in it, I swapped it either for somehting that I had as a spare (off another virago) or for the sidestand relay (forget which, I had this problem off and on for 2 years) ... Now the side stand relay has a short and the starter relay has an open.
The suzuki one didn't work. OK no biggie there, a 4 pin relay can be dual pole, dual throw, or 1 pole 3 throw or the poles and switches can be juxtaposed 90 degrees I guess too.
Its that relay, I have dealt with it before. I cheaped/chickened out by swapping the parts the last few times. Maybe I should implement a new 6 pole relay system which takes another set of inputs to switch, like the start button. There have been people on the viragotech that have done it.
BTW on the savage web site, people have implemented a switch that runs the decompression solenoid upon shutdown. Cos if it backfires, it can break the starter's idler loose from its pivot. Some funky ass solution will be implemented. Or not.
Cool.

Hmmm.  I guess it's possible for a relay to be "normally ON" (switches the main circuit OFF when power is applied to the coil) ... but I can't think of a good use for that on a motorcycle.  :dunno_white:

I'd be surprised if a kickstand relay is designed to handle the large amount of current that goes through a starter motor relay.  (I'm talking about the circuit switched by the relay, not the relay coil itself).  Does the kickstand relay still work in a workbench test, or did it get fried?

No kerry, this is not the GS style starter relay that has the starter motor wired into it right from the battery. Its a switch really. The starter current runs thru a different wire. The side stand relay does like this, if A and B are connected, it connects C and D. This one does the same thing with the start button I think, or with the ignition switch. OK time to look in the manual.

Sounds like you knew the answer to that particular question all along.  ;)

Good luck figuring out the rest of it!  :thumb:

Kerry - No ... I swapped the Side stand relay (I believe) from the GS into the virago's starter relay. Not the GS starter relay into the virago - that is so faaaar off, not even close ...
That's why I had to ask if relays are all similar cos the side stand relay off the virago will work in place of its starter relay, so why not GS side stand relay in place of that.
Cool.
