what kind of engines have you all seen swapped into the gs500?  what would be the best fitment wise? i am not worried about custom mounts, etc just downt want to have to modify any frame tubes.   maybe an sv650 motor or possibly a older gsxr 600 or 750 motor?  any links to any projects like this would be greatly appreciated.

Mmmm... I cant really recall seeing any there have been some Turbo GS mods and some over bores but I dont think I have seen like a 4cyl GS or anything.

another inline twin could work an ex500 is the onlyone I know about being done. A vtwin may need some frame and drivetrain moding. A i4 just won't fit properly

Seen an EX. The GR650 will fit with minimal mod, if you can find one. Someone has installed a thumper, DR maybe? 2-smokers should fit without any problems.

I4's front sprocket will not line up with the rear. Vtwin exhausts may have problem with rear shock location, typically the shock is offset.

Yea you always want to stuff the largest you can find. 
I recomend a Hayabusa at a minumum or a ZX14 RR. Yea kawasaki schmawasaki ... stuff it man.

a inline 4 will line up if i use the swingarm and wheel assembly too!!  this has really got me thinking!! i would just have to narrow up the swing arm pivot area  to make it work. although maybe the frame would get in the way of the chain.i need to measure a inline 4 to see if it is even possible i guess.  i am looking to build something similar to a cbr 916 or fz1 cost wise maybe i would be better off just buying one of those but i like to build things myself.

Those fancy japanese engineers have done all the thinking for you. All you have to do is follow their handbook, and riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide man. I'm not knocking your want for a different motor, but the gs motor is pretty damned reliable, makes for a quick ride, and is easy as snot to work on.

If you really have an itch for more displacement, or just a different sound, go on and get another ride ! Nothing wrong with having 2,3 or 10 bikes, so long as the wife permits it.

If you end up with a megasquirt turbo gs, make sure you document everything, so we can copy you and be really cool too !

Kwaka 650r is a parallel twin...........
I've always wondered about putting a BMW thumper 650 in the GS too.................that would be rather costly to get your hands on though.

in regards to the prarie enginei dont know how a CVT tranny would be in a bike i think it would be kinda weird!!!!     I would love to just ride but my engine needs rebuilt the cost of having someone rebuild it would probably cost as much as buying a new GS, thats why i am looking ay different alternatives and more than possibly going to part it out or just sell it if someone is interested.

By rebuild, what is needed ? Check ebay, wrecking yards, etc. You could likely find a new-to-you motor in a crashed bike, or maybe a member here has one for sale.

Swapping the motors would be easier than rebuilding... and definitely easier than trying to shoe-horn a 650-anything in there

You can put a I4 in the gs frame but the engine will stick out the right side when trying to line up the sprockets. I would go with a two stroke or an inline twin with a 650cc. what Terry said the kawi would be pretty cool a GS650.

Rebuilding a motor is not too difficult. It is a very simple design. Easy to learn by following a service manual. I am in the process of rebuilding my 5th motor with nothing more than a manual to follow and of course some help from this site. Having some basic tools and mechanical ability is required. I have someone do my cylinder boring and other machining where the equipment required is prohibitive to own.

The cost of parts can seem expensive but you will have basically a new motor when you are done. I just spent close to $100 on crank bearings, seals and other wear items. It is going to be a stout motor when I am done.

What is wrong with your motor?

dgyver,   engine knock,  sounds like a rod or main bearing, i had just changed the oil when it happened i dont know if i possibly dropped a valve or killed the rings or what because there was zero oil in it when the knock started. all the oil was on my buddy and his cbr900rr behind me.  the engine still runs!!

Probably burned up a rod bearing. They will die before the crank bearings. It is worth splitting the case to know.

I bought my 97 motor that way. With only 6000 miles, it spun rod bearing and burned crank. Also it was in pieces.  Replaced the crank and rods from a GS450. The GS450 crank looked better than any GS500 crank that I have seen. Bought it for $75 and less than $100 to rebuild. Runs like new now.

The Hysung 650 GT is a GS frame with an SV650 engine in it.I almost bought one and then I found my GS for a better price.

uhuh forgot about the hyosung having a vtwin.

i wish someone would just buy it my wife is on my case about getting it out of here!!!!!

This is incorrect. the GT650, is a first generation SV650 with full fairings and different suspension.
you may be able to utilize an EX500 motor, or the EX650, either of which are very cool engines to use. they both come with 8 valves rather than 4, which rocks and makes more torque in the lower-upper rpm ranges.

heh ive got a gr650 ( tempter) sittin in my garage waiting for a good gs frame. lol ( been a plan to do this for qwuite a while
