Found this in my sump....

Got my first street bike and went to change the oil and found the drain plug stripped out.  So I pulled the sump to find this laying in there...

Appears to be plastic and it's thick on one side and tapers down.  That's all that was in the sump, no other bits.

Anyone have an idea of what it is?

The PO supposedly had his mechanic do some work to it not too long ago, installed higher compression pistons?  Don't know if this is a chunk of something from that work?

Thanks!

It could be a piece of cam chain tensioner

Looks like a piece of the epoxy resin that holds the magnets onto the flywheel has broken off.

Is this a bad thing?

It would be good idea to check condition of the alternator magnets ,the epoxy holds any chipped magnets in place

If a magnet was loose you would know about it by now.

You know what's weird?

How did this chunk find it's way to the sump ,there aren't any oil holes for it to squeeze through there :icon_confused:

That's why I first thought it could be a chunk of cam chain tensioner blade

You are going to want to pull of the left side case cover and look around. My magnet came off on the race bike and was making a grinding noise, the epoxy was still stuck to the magnet, but the magnet was no longer attached to the housing.

Ok check this thread :

Amazing that chunks that size get through and into the engine ,this Srinath's-Goat's-Starwalt's  syndrome stuff scares me

I'm off to check on my magnets...

Excellent!  Thanks for all the help

Yup, magnet lacquer. It will come off and get through the large holes under the rotor and end up in the sump, however its not going anywhere from there.
Cool.
