so, i'm looking at the possibility of purchasing a shotgun. who makes a good, reliable versitile gun? hunting just about anything in Ohio requires the use of a shotgun. the inlaws hunt mainly with muzzel loaders. they usually hunt deer. then they got their "toy" guns. (guns they use to shoot clays). any suggestions?

well, i've shot a 4-10....it was easy to handle but i think i'd need something a bit bigger. i've also had the chance to shoot a 12 guage and a 20 gauge. of course we were only shooting clays but i was a bit more accurate with the 20 gauge.  i know to some folks this may still seem like a "youth" gun but i'd rather get a medium sized gun and get damn good with it than to get a bigger gun and have a hard time with it.  :dunno_white:

But if I were you I would start with a Pump.I Prefer Mossberg's but Remington,Winchester ETC. all make a Very Good Reliable Shotgun.Go to your Local Gun Shop and do some Shopping. :thumb:

for price, quality and versatility.. Any lower end Mossberg 12ga pump will do just fine  :thumb: I dont know what model mine is but I bought it mainly for defense and trap shooting  :thumb:

Ithaca model 37 12 gauge pump. Goes in the bottom, ejects out the bottom. Great for right or leftys. Featherlight. Tradeoff is that it'll thump the piss out of you. Mine has no recoil pad. Not cheap.

Remington 870 in either 12 or 20 gauge magnum. The 20 gauge mag is as effective as a 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch (standard). You can shoot standard 20 gauge or the 3 inch magnum in the gun. Cheap, effective, dependable.

Mossberg 500 Or Remington 870, both are proven reliable and have huge parts and accessory aftermarkets.

If your going to hunt multiple game types I'd suggest an adjustable choke like a polychoke.

Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

Most shotguns today "come with" several chokes. They are called "remchokes", winchokes, etc. If you don't have a "poly choke" or any of the aforementioned, a gun smith can "bore" your barrel and thread it so as to accept these different screw in chokes (if your barrel is thick enough). On my Model 37, I actually would have to purchase extral barrels to change choke patterns. Not cheap. I think my barrel is too thin to bore for winchokes. I use a "modified" choke on this pump. It is the best all around choke if you could only choose one. You might wanna checkout

This is a recoil table if you are concerned about recoil.

There are some guys over there that know a tiny tiny bit about "guns" in general. They shoot a good deal and some ain't too bad when it comes to cookin' either!

wow I can't believe a gun thread got this far this quietly lol

I'm very biased.  I had a Mossberg 500A for the longest time and absolutely loved it.  Smooth, light, reliable...never once jammed...and it was consistent and accurate.  Mossberg all the way.

okay guys. don't call me a moron please but i have a question. concerning over-under shotguns. if it only has a single trigger, are both shots used at once or do you actually get 2 shots? :dunno_white:

I know i might be a little late on this thread but i have a question...In ohio (Like new york ) do you have to use a slug gun (or slug barrle) to hunt dear.  If that is the case i would look for something that has mulitple barrle swap outs....I remember reading about one recently but im drawing a blank on the name...
