I've got the V&H full.  How would i go about quieting it down?

I'm receiving complaints from my neighbors.

Suck it up, buttercup.  The V&H full for a GS isn't that loud.  You want loud come stand in my garage while I light my bike up, better yet stand behind it when I bounce it off the rev-limiter. :nono: :nono:

I know with my exhaust, they make an insert 'to bring the exhaust closer to street legal' though I'm pretty sure it still exceeds most states limits.  I would bet V&H makes something similar.

I'm hoping for more of a DIY approach... maybe someone on here has done it, or seen it done before.

You can re-pack it, Take a flash light and look in the end, see if the packing is burnt and thin. You will need to drill out the rivets and repack, then rivet back together. You can buy exhaust packing at any good Cycle shop  :thumb:

Some may even do it for you  :thumb:

~ 98 Shadow ACE 750 ~ Black Straight Pipes ~ UNI Filter ~ Dyno Jet Stage 1 ~ Sissy Bar ~

You can buy exhaust packing at any bad cycle shop, too.  And it's cheap.
Do you have any sort of baffle in the can, a street baffle might help things.

spc

repacking is more involved than installing a baffle in a bolt-on can.  However, since I can't seem to find a baffle for the system to quiet it up I would say re-packing is your best bet.  Just remember, not to tight and not to loose.

Im working on a Open pipe at the moment , I love the way it sounds , trying to get a Bend made to make sure i get decent back pressure . loud exhausts are sick!! , i recon Terrys Duc would get a lil motion in the pants

In more ways than one my friend.  The sound is sweet, but the bike vibrates like a gorilla with epilepsy at idle.  Back pressure is why you have complex crossovers on a 2 into 2 system :cookoo:  The underside almost looks like spaghetti with the damn exhaust pipes.

gatorade cap with a hole in it and some duct tape ? no really, it will make the V&H near silent if you don't rev and blow it out.

once you're down the road reach down and pull it off, enjoy the sweet V&H song again.

just putting your hand partially over the pipe will give you an idea just how quiet it CAN be with a little rigging. they'll be complaining about your VALVES before you know it ;)

Suck it up buttercup? Nice. :icon_rolleyes:
Facepants I have heard the V&H system, it is very annoying. For the tiny performance increase you get its not worth pissing the neighbors off, some guys like to throw out a tuff guy approach but you have to live next to people and its best if can get along with them. I say put the stock system back on and enjoy your bike. Remember a 5 year old 600 with a stock pipe is still faster than a GS with a wanna be exhaust.

Good comment,  :thumb: I dont need loud pipes to enjoy my bikes nor do I want to piss my neighbours off either. If I am out and someone is breaking into my house/garage I want them to call the Police......not laugh and say "serves you fuggin` right".

Anyways......

If you want to quite down you Vance and Hines system they offer a special baffle and end cap that are supposed to reduce the noise level by 10%. And depending on the packing in the can now, the addition of the new baffle and packing probably will help even more.

You can get the kit from Dennis Kirk for $46.95

I have not used this myself but thats whats out there. A good tip for going through the 'hood is to keep the revs way to down and go easy on the throttle!
