Alright, so I am sure that some of you have seen the Supertrapp exhaust that they used to make for the GS. Its a full system, headers, midpipe and can. I just won one NIB off ebay, maybe you saw the auction. Anyway, my searches on here have revealed little to me about this exhaust. Right now I have a muzzy slip-on on the stock headers. Not 100% sure what the bike is jetted to but I know it is jetted since I have the stock jets in a bag from when I bought the bike. Anyway.....can anyone tell me anything about this exhaust? I love the sound of my current exhaust but I was tempted by the idea of new headers since mine are starting to get a bit rusty. Any information is appreciated, pictures of the system on a bike would be AWESOME, since i don't have it yet.

i wonder if you could tune that exhaust to not need a re-jet ? it does have the tuning disks, right ?

The basic rule of thumb with Supertrapp exhausts is simply this: The more discs you add to the system, the louder the exhaust, and the more jetting becomes a factor. If you want to avoid running the engine too lean, which will cause BAD things to happen, start with only a few discs (no more than three), to see what the effect is. If you're running rich, add two discs, and take another test ride. If you're running lean, prepare to rejet, and cut the discs to a minimum in the meantime.

Again, if you're running rich, add two discs at a time, until you start to run lean. At that point, remove AT LEAST one disc, and re-test. Chances are, by the time you actually NOTICE that you've been running lean, you'll have to remove MORE than one disc, so be prepared to do so. IMO, Supertrapps sound MUCH better than stock, but you have to be aware of the trade-offs of using a tunable exhaust. If you add too many discs, you'll not only make excessive noise (which pisses off cops, neighbors, passersby, and a lot of other motorcyclists), you'll also risk burning the exhaust valves (or other serious engine damage), which means major headaches and expenses in the near future for you.

There is also the possibility that you will HAVE to rejet, because the freer-flowing Supertrapp will make your engine too lean regardless of the number of discs you remove, so BE AWARE of the hazards. I don't want to find out you've smoked something in the engine simply because you installed a Supertrapp, and didn't pay attention to the effects...

BTW, how about posting the link to the eBay auction? I'd like to see exactly what you won, and I'm sure others would like to see it as well... I don't recall EVER seeing a complete Supertrapp for a GS... so post the eBay link, and let us get a peek at your new exhaust system.

I mean as I said, I know my bike has larger jets installed in it, but I am not sure what size they are. I've got a slip-on already so I am hoping that I won't need to do any more jetting with the supertrapp. Here is the link, lemme know what you guys think.

For some reason, I thought you had bought a full-on stainless system; that thing is an antique, and VERY fitting for the stone-age GS engine. I've had similar ones (though not on a GS), and I think you'll like the "retro" look it provides. In fact, I still have some discs for both the 3" and 4" Supertrapp exhaust cans here, somewhere...

I don't doubt that your GS has been rejetted; in fact, I wrote that advice to you based on that belief. If I'd thought that you were running STOCK jetting, I'd have advised you to start looking for larger jets NOW, so you could find a good deal on oversized pilots and mains, before your new Supertrapp arrives.

If you don't have any washers (to shim the carb needles with), send me a PM with a mailing address, and I'll toss some in an envelope and send them to you. I buy packs of 100, so I can send you a dozen this week. That way, you'll have them available in case you need to do some ultra-fine tuning, say, to clear an off-idle stumble. Having them on hand is one less thing you'll need to worry about, and even though you probably won't need more than four (or two, or none), they're EASY to drop and lose. They're TINY, so they like to run away and hide... Once your jetting is dialed-in, you can always pass the extras along to someone else, or keep them in a box on your workbench, in hopes that they'll begin breeding...

OK, jokes aside, if you want a dozen washers, let me know in a PM, and I'll drop them in the mail this week. Your carbs MIGHT already have washers under the needles, but since you don't know one way or the other, it won't hurt to have them handy for the big day. Shimming a carb needle is one of the most basic ways of fine-tuning jetting; once you've shimmed one GS carb needle, you'll want to shim ALL of them.

Remember to shim them EQUALLY; if you put a washer under one needle, do the same thing to the other carb. It might sound stupid, but I sent some washers to a friend, and he was in such a rush to get everything put back together, he only shimmed ONE needle, then couldn't figure out why his GS didn't run quite right... until he noticed that he had eleven washers sitting on his workbench, instead of only ten. Good thing he was bored and decided to count them...

Also, you should probably pick up some new exhaust gaskets for the Supertrapp; do NOT try to reuse the existing exhaust gaskets UNLESS they're in damn near PERFECT condition, and do NOT simply install NEW gaskets on top of OLD ones. I've seen dumbasses do that, thinking they'll get a tighter fit with the header pipes; when they tighten the exhaust manifold bolts, they strip the bolt holes, and have LOTS of fun cutting new threads, or installing Heli-Coil inserts...

Don't know what year your GS is; this drawing is for a 1996 model:

http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/Suzuki/1989/Motorcycles/2103_14.gif

You need TWO of the exhaust gaskets (#1 in the drawing), one for each header (though I'm sure you already know that). The part number (for 1996 and probably ALL years, but CHECK to be sure) is 14181-01D00, and mrcycles.com lists them for $4.88 each; I don't know what the stealership will want for them...

Here's a link to the mrcycles.com price list, so you can see it yourself:

One last bit of advice; hang on to your old slip-on (and headers) until you've got the jetting correct with the Supertrapp exhaust. No sense in selling it until you know everything fits, and works properly, with no nightmares or headaches.

Good luck; let us know when the Supertrapp arrives...

does anyone have any history on this exhaust, the guy listed it as being for the 1989....so my assumption is that they may have only made it in 1989....If that is so, this is a pretty cool find, a brand new 19 year old exhaust.

as far as jetting, I will try it as is and be very careful to check to see if it is running lean. if it is....
I plan to jet it to

150/40 with 1 washer and 3 turns.
I am also planning to get a lunch box or pod filters.

So what is the verdict on your supertrapp? I have been thinking about installing one of these to my adventure project GS.

I ran them when I raced and love the tunable nature of the supertrapp. instead of changing jets for elevation you can just remove a disk or two, pretty cool.

let's see some video!!!
