So, the first mods I have settled on are replacement fork springs, 14t front sprocket and replacement filter (possibly). To help me decide, and order the right parts, I've got a few questions:

Apex'i is, by a long shot, the best...but K&N is crazy cheap in comparison.  That does seem like the correct filter.

The alst three questions....not really.  You'd have to open up both ends of th engine.

Ok, I might not bother then. What's the cheapest and easiest way to add a phallic roar?

K&N RU-2970 (aka LUNCHBOX) and high flowing aftermarket pipe, rejet is a MUST! If you don't rejet your engine will lose a lot of power and eventually blow!

That is the correct drop in filter.No rejet is need unless the restrictor is removed.

What about an exhaust by itself? Could that deliver performance + roar, or does it need the "lunchbox" (what an odd name) too?

Either way you'll have to rejet.An open filter like the K&N lunch box will give you some intake moan.For best performance and sound lunch box and performance exhaust.Check this links out.

I recently put on a K&N lunchbox and rejetted.  And to answer your question, it depends what you mean by 'performance'.

If by performance you simply mean, is there more power?  Probably in a numerical sense, but it's too subtle an increase to really tell.

But if by performance you mean the quality of the ride and the usability of the power, then it makes a huge difference.  I find that my throttle response has been transformed, the power delivery is instant, and start-up has improved dramatically. 

I say that it's a great upgrade - and while you're rejetting you may aswell put a new pipe on too.

Not a drop-in replacement, but they make pods.

man that got me laughin-

you could chop up the stock pipe. that would mean rejetting though. the lunchbox and whatever free flowing pipe will do just what you want. yes, the rejetting gets 'interesting', but if you want that sound, that's how.

it's a pretty fun thing though, when you finally get rid of the popping and flat spots, and it just runs right.
