Hi everyone, another new member here.  Just bought a GS500E; my first 'big' bike since running around on a CG125.

It's a 1997, done around 32k kms and is in fairly good nick except for a few rust spots (nothing serious I hope).

I just picked it up from North of England and had a blast riding it back to Scotland today, despite having all weathers on the way up (sunshine, rain, and two hail storms included!)

Thought I should take it easy on the run up, especially on the wet oily / muddy roads (A697 / A68), but discovered an enjoyable ride at a decent speed on the dry.

Only one problem so far: going from 2nd to 1st gear sticks in neutral occasionally.  Would appreciate any good tips about maintenance and things to keep an eye on.

Also, since the display is in kilometers, and the UK is in mph, can anyone advice where I can source a new speedo unit (and do I need a conversion kit)?

Thanks all, and looking forward to more enjoyable riding on my new GS.
Yooblonder.

P.S. I also need a manufacturer's / Haynes manual.

Amazon/ebay/Halfrauds/any decent bookshop for a Haynes manual. Owners handbook is available as a spare part from Suzuki dealers for about £10

Gearchange issue.....dont worry, they all do it but an oil and filter change will do no harm and be a good idea if you have no service history and it might improve things slightly. A poorly adjusted clutch may also cause selection problems.

Strange that its got a KPH speedo. A grey or continental import maybe?  When Jay Wolf gets in here later he might still have a spare MPH one and may consider selling it to you. Other wise checkout ebay or pay a visit to your local breakers.

I've never had the problem myself, but I've heard that gear change issues could result from the oil level being too high/low. Have you checked the oil in your new bike?

Oil should be checked with the bike on the centrestand, on level ground, with the dipstick NOT screwed in.

I always knew when my Baby G needed an oil change... I'd have a harder time getting him into first!  :cookoo:

Er, not yet.  I know I should be checking it regularly, and I want to change the oil anyway, but I've not been able to get the dipstick loose yet; feels like it has been screwed in with super-glue.

The gear changes into 1st seem to be most difficult if there's some choke on.  Will try the oil change first and see how that improves things.

Emmm, I've only got old pics from the seller.  It's been too wet around here to get decent pictures.  Is one of the rain cover any use?!

Thanks to all for great advice and comments.  This seems to be a very active community and one I'll be making use of much more in future.

Re Manuals, are there any on-line / downloadable manuals available?

Cheers.

To be honest, it doesn't rain every day in Scotland, sometimes it snows... or it hails like it did today!

And to be fair, we do have a very balanced weather system.  Long summer evenings are just excellent.
