Hey,
Can the magnets in a tank bag do any harm to the paint on the tank?  How about if it is left on for a prolonged period of time?

I had my bag on my old bike which had a crappy spray can job and probably no clear coat and it caused some issues with the paint (you could see where the magnets came in contact with the tank).

My GS has the original paint and I'm hoping that it can stand up to the magnets better than the old bike.

I have had a magnetic bag for a few years now. I don't use it all of the time, but enough. It has caused no damage that I can see. I am careful though not to slide it around while it's on and such. The tank still looks great! It's a Joe Rocket sport bag by the way. Is't made anymore.

Yes, my Idiot friend bought a bike that was resprayed (and it looked like a beautiful paint job BTW) and used a tank bag on it. 6 months and there were millions of scuff marks on the damn thing. I told him that he was a shallow and dumb F#$K who bought a bike cos it was pretty and its all his fault.

He ignored me, sold his bike to someone on here (it was in Atlanta and ~2 years ago and the bike was black and 91 I think with 6-7K on it when he sold it) and bought a V star 1100 off ebay. It was also very pretty, and the spark plugs threaded in 1.5 turns and then stopped, and any time you take it off, it will come with many slivers of metallic sheite ... I told him that he was a shallow and dumb F#$K who bought a bike cos it was pretty and its all his fault.

He ignored me, sold his bike to someone in chicago last year and was buying some other pretty ass pos.

So moral of the story ... Dont listen to the Buddha and screw up your bike. The Buddha will then blame you for everything.

I don't know what tank bags you guys are talking about, but the one I'm using (Joe Rocket Manta) and few others I've seen have some kind of rubberized protection under the magnets and the bottom doesn't really have anything on it that would make me think it could scratch anything. I don't use mine a lot, but from the times I have, I'm not seeing any problems. Or even potential for problems. Am I missing something? Are you guys talking about some super cheap bags that actually have the magnets contacting the tank? Or are you talking about the actual magnetic field causing a problem.... cause then you're crazy. 

Any time you put anything on a finish you are risking damage.  It depends on the amount of clear that is put on as to the severity of the damage.  Factory coats are really thick so the scuffs can be buffed out. I would not suggest leaving it on all the time as to sun fading around the bag and not under it but you shouldn't have a big problem

I have a rapid transit that cover's the magnets. They are very strong magnets but if I'm not paying attention the magnets are so strong that it clangs and it scares me that it could scratch it. My biggest fear was that it would interfer with my defibrillator if I leaned over too close. Guidant checked the device and it hasn't reprogrammed it yet I guess that is a good thing!

Anyhow. other than the magnets that are so strong that one day I was walking out the door and the thing attached to my door and I had to really pull to get it off it is an awesome bag! It has a cell phone slot, ipod slot with earjack port, hydration port, it converts to a back pack, map pocket, and has a waterproof cover that tucks into the back of it. It was $70 at the Polaris dealership.

Well they make strap on tank bags and theres always tail bags

I have had no problem with mine. Just make sure your tank is clean when you put the bag on and dont slide the magnets around when they are stuck to the tank.

I put 8,000 miles onto my first bike and carried a tank bag for most of those: not a single mark. With the original paint I can't imagine you'll have any problems.

I'm just hoping my respray job is up to the task...

Yea respray = disaster. I ahve heard that it doesn't cure, it just dries. That cant be any good.
I painted this seca tank with this stuff called hardnose paint. That damn thing was hard as a rock, I couldn't sand it with 400 grit. I had scratches under the paint that came through and looked like sheite. But that is 2 part paint that is thick as paste.

The ONLY way to paint a bike and get it to look good is with a good Base coat clear coat.  Enamel is ok for things like metal trim pieces triple tree and stuff like that . For tank and plastics any big area Base coat clear coat is the only way to do it. MY experience I like ChromaBase personally but any is good and if you get it scratched it buffs pretty much out. Unless the paint is scratched. It takes a little more time but it is alot better finish.

If your worried about the tankbag scratching the paint, get some rubber drawer liner (ya know, that non slip suff). It's like 5 dollars for a large roll at most stores.  I think the brand name is Grip-It. Anyway, Cut it to match the base of the tankbag, then use it between the tankbag and the tank. It acts like a rubber cushion.   I have been using for about a year now. It works great!

The hydration port is for a camel back system. It has a pocket inside you can place the bladder in that keeps it from sweating on your stuff or getting anything wet. It also has a specialized hole that will fit the tube and then a clip to hold it in place while you ride. Unfortunately, you gotta buy the camel back seperate.

Do you ride around with the camelback tube in your helmet? This sounds kinda cool but possibly silly.
