I changed out the forks on my bike for Katana Forks.  and on braking im hearing an odd clunking sound on the intial slow down, i though it was just sloshing but that doesnt seem to makes sence.  anybody know what it could be?

Stem bearings?

That is a freaking first ... clucking ... you try talking back to it.
Maybe the bike is having a baby. You check if it wants more oil ??

OK seriously neck bearings will handle like sheite before they do anything.
But how and what you did to them may determine if the bypass the first 30-40,0000.... symptoms and jump straight to the "not in a million years" stage.

Cool.

I put the bearings in, but i didnt repack them, which they may need.  But ive just never heard the clunking noice before.

Clunk ... not cluck like in your first post ???
OK yea, maybe bearings.
However you put spacers under the thing and on top ?? or did you do somehting else. Yea somewhere a bit of play has crept in.
Cool.

If you are sure the headstock bearings are ok it could be the fork bushes that are worn......thats the bushes inside the forks that allow the tubes to slide inside the legs...... Might be why the PO sold them. Take each fork off, clamp the leg in a vice, grab the end of the tube and try and bend it......should be no flex there whatsoever.

darb85

not sure at all with the headstock bearings.  im going to replace them first then worry about the play, the suspension seems to work fine no noises until the intial brake point then it clunks so im going to replace the bearings and go from there

There is 2-3-4-5 ways of doing it.
You need to take up ~1/2 to 5/8th of an inch.
So 1. Spacer on bottom for 1/2 that, and top for the other 1/2 and spacer everywhere to get it all working.
2. All spacer on bottom - wont work cos the bearing dont have enough room to seat on the stem.
3. All on top.
4. Grind out and shove stem in the lower triple, weld it and spacers on top.
5. Grind out and push in the stem and weld on bottom, and cut and mill and machine and everything on top for a no spacer fit. -------- That is what werase, average and I have in our bikes.
So you should explain what you did. That may give us a clue why ...

Also check the front rotors. There usually is play in the buttons holding the rotor to the carrier.
Common sense in not very common.

darb85

ok ill check those too.

How do you fix it if its the rotors?

Rotors can wiggle a bit side to side. Just leave it be. But your clunk noise prolly is not that. That usually will not make a noise at all.

there is about and inch spacer on the top of the stem.  seems to keep it tight.  put it on the triple and jerked it to see if there was movement and it seems tight.  Ill check the bearings and go from there.

unless your brgs are pitted or rusty as hell......grease will fix them better/cheaper than new brgs

want Iain's money to support my butt in kens shop

darb85

thats what i was thinking is repacking them and seeing if that fixes it.

K you got the thing in there and spaced the top to fit. OK, you think the spacer has lateral movement ?
And your think somehting else is clobbering somehting else, like the headlight bucket hitting the under side of the lock maybe ?
Cool.
