So, I'm looking at buying a new motor to play around with. I found one available, but the guy seems kinda shady...
Is there a number or something on the motor to check if it came from a stolen bike? thanks for your help....

At least on my GS (91), it's stamped on the right hand side, right near the oil filler cap. Normally matches the VIN, I believe. Of course, an unmatched number does not mean stolen bike (this has already been covered here, since lots of people flop around engines from bike to bike). You could still have the DMV run a VIN check on it.

It does not match the VIN ... its another number, but the number can be in some states listed in the title and in other states it can be in the title but everyone ignores it  etc etc ...
Cool.
