I had to switch on my reserve the other day and then when I filled up I put 2.9 gallons in and it was full.  Is it a 3 gallon tank?  I thought it was bigger.

GS has 4.5 gal tank 89-00 and a 5.3 gal tank from 01 on.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

The original tanks ('89 -'00) hold ~ 4.5 gallons, though California tanks only hold 4.0 gallons. I don't know the specs for the newer tanks ('01+), but I think they hold slightly more.

A lot has been posted about this subject in the past; just search here and you'll find some good information on why "filling" the tank doesn't always get it full.

to actually FILL the tank you have to do the 'fill, then wiggle' method. fill the neck, or try sticking the gas nozzle into the tank farther, and wiggle wobble the bike while pumping SLOWLY. you can get it full that way, but it's a PITA and takes forever.

i just fill my 98 to the neck and stop. :)
