Hi guys!  I'm new here and new to motorcycling overall.  My wife shocked me yesterday and showed up with an 04 GS500f with 6,100 miles.  I love the way these bikes look and I'm taller so it fits me better.  I'm taking my msf course next weekend so I'm really itching to ride :).  Anyways, we only started it one time since I got it and it runs good.  The only problem is that when I stand it straight up, some gas come out of the leakage pipe (sorry, don't know the correct term).  The tube is on the right side of the bike is about 1/4 in thick that drains to the ground.  I've been told not to worry about it because it probably got too much gas but I wanted to check with the experts.  When it's on the side stand nothing comes out.  The fuel tank is on reserve because I don't think there is too much gas in there.  The leak is not much, but constant when the bike is upright (engine off and power off).  After sitting on it for about 10 seconds upright and after the gas was on the floor, the sport was almost as big as a slice of bread.  Any help will be appreciated, I'm a newbie to bikes and don't know anything about them.  Thanks everyone!

Mine was doing the same thing when I first brought it home.  Mine had been sitting up for over a year though.  I did nothing to fix it and it doesn't do it anymore.  There may be a reason that it is happening, but I haven't a clue.  I didn't investigate my leak any further once it stopped.

Congrats on the new bike and welcome to the site!

I would say it's not normal to have fuel draining out of this tube. Fist off, are you sure it is  gasoline? There is also a vent hose from the battery; maybe the battery is too full and it is spilling when the bike is vertical? Maybe the fuel lines are mixed up somehow?

It might help if you posted a photo... follow these steps: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=15370.0

4 things that hose could be.

1- the drain for the recessed fuel cap could have moister or fuel in it.Don't worry if this is the problem

2-drain from the battery dripping water/acid mix.Just make sure it's long enough to keep the water/acid mix off the bike as you ride.

3-carb vent.Sometimes fuel vapor will condense inside of it and drip. This is ok.If it drips frequently, your carb floats may be set to high or the needle/seat valve has worn.

4-air box drain. No big deal unless fuel is coming from there. There should be absolutely no fuel coming from this line. The cause is the same as number 3

Knowing where the line connects at will help to solve the mystery.

Hi everyone, thanks for the warm welcome.  I'm attaching a picture of the drains.  I believe it's the longest one thats kind of in the back.  I just took this picture and stood the bike up straight and I couldn't get it to leak.  But in the picture, the tube in the middle (that looks caped off) I was able to push that and gas came out the end, is that how that one is made or do you think it needs a replacement?  This is really a mystery, I'll continue to monitor is and keep everyone updated.  Thanks again!

The hose with the split cap drains the air box and there should be no gas come out of it.The other hose I believe is the carb vent, not sure.Your bike is newer than mine. The shortest one in the back is the drain for the recessed gas cap.The gas tank vent is located in the flip back gas cap.

I agree with ben2go, you shouldn't have a fuel leak from the airbox drain.

Again, are you sure it's gasoline (i.e. maybe it's just water condensate from sitting so long)? You might want to remove the air filter and look into the air box to see if there fluid sitting in there.

If there is gasoline in the airbox, it may be the result of sticking float valves in your carbs. This should only be a problem if you left the bike on PRI though.

And I too, agree with you.

Thanks guys!  I had it out and running yesterday and I had no problems.  Maybe during transport it just got shook around or something.  I'll keep you posted in a few days, I can wait to get my license!!! :thumb:

ohgood

all gs's have rust on the frame and little bolts that secure the engine cases.

yours does not, therefore, it must be something else. ;)
