WTB-GS Fuel Tank in good condition

Looking for a new tank for my 1994 GS.  After reassembling my new bike, and adding some new fuel to fire her up, I sadly realized that there was a slow leak at the seam of the tank.  Thinking of re-sealing, but would rather just replace it.

I have a beauty I just sealed. It wasn't even rusty to start with so I have good metal covered by POR15. Its a silver color and it dent free but for a spot on the left side at the ridge with a sorta flat spot.
I'd trade it for your tank + $100. The POR alone is $60 - as I do it for people, and I've been told its a bargain.
BTW a seam leak is easy to cure by lining, just clean and derust it like your life depends on it and if the leak hasn't grown, it can be lined up well and its good.
A hole in the middle of a panel smaller than a pin head can be a nightmare though. I am also experimenting with some tanks that have their crap pockets entirely rusted out and I am trying to cut it and eliminate it ... dont worry, you're getting a regular tank, not one of my experiments.

Hey Buddha,

Thanks for the info.  After much debate, and some thoughtful insight from tank sealing vets such as yourself, we have decided to undertake lining the tank and will hopefully avoid having to buy a new tank entirely.  Thanks a lot for the help and good luck with your future experimenting in tank refurbishing!

If the leak is at the seam and your rust removal method does not lake it much worse, yes sealing will work. POR 15 is the ideal agent, though I have a soft corner for Kreem also, especially if you're not powdercoating it, I dont see how kreem is worse than POR15.
I suggest you treat the rust, and treat it well, and you want clean dry and pitted steel - which is easy, just get it dry with a towel after the acid etch step and use very very hot water when you do wash acid off and drop a towel and shake it and hold one end of the towel and get it back out, and then POR15 it. However if you start leaking more, or the panel blows a hole in some other spot, do not put in POR, weld it or something, then POR 15. Once you drop POR 15 in it, its near impossible to get out.

I am also in need of a replacement tank.   I just bought a GS500 as my first bike and it wasnt running at the time.  I knew I was going to spend some money on her but unless I find a tank in the next couple of days I am going to have to sell her back or take her apart for parts. 

The bike shop sent it out to get cleaned and coated.  The tank was not repairable.  it actually got distorted from all the chemicals.
So to make a long story short i need a tank.

Buddha, will you be willing to sell me the tank or just accepting trades for it?  You said it was silver right?

Any direction on where to find a replacement tank?  I tried MrCycles.com already, the price is too hight to justify.

By the way all of these estimated repairs would bring to $2000-2100 for a 1994 GS500 w/19,000 miles.  Is that reasonable or is she too far gone and I should just let her loose.  This will be my first bike.

Yea I'll sell it. I'll call it at $125 and shipping. Its not perfect, but pretty darn close. Its also fully coated inside with POR 15.
1500 - 2K will get you a GS with all the usual compliment of defects ... easy. Anyway, make your decision and let me know.
It may have dents, but none are visible except that little flat spot in the ridge. It may have been previously repaired with filler etc etc.

How much do you have in it? Is $2K a generous estimate (including top shelf tires, chain, cables, levers, etc), or is it the bare minimum to get it running as far as you know? Miles kill resale value with certain exceptions (CBR's, VFR's, many BMW's). On anything else, 19K will annoy the next buyer. A new tank is $600 at my dealer or $400 online, and if that is all a perfect bike needs, it is money well spent. If the bike is a basket case, well not so much. A used tank sounds so much cheaper, but if you want no rust, no dents, no coating, nice paint, a new tank is what you want if you are planning to keep the bike for a few years. That said, I have a ratty plain red bike, with a crappy tank that I painted with a rattlecan in 10 minutes. Looks fine from 100 feet away, and there is enough other little crap that needs attention, that the tank is fine until gas starts leaking on my leg.....

It was a neglected bike for many years.  I wanted something safe that I can learn on, so cosmetics is not as important as functionality to me.  I bought the bike for $900 and the repairs including a nice used tank is going to bring up the grand total to $2000-2100.  I guess that is the price you pay to learn.  But the GS does not have much parts to paint besiides the tank and tail fairings so I was thinking off a fresh paint job myself to improve the looks.

Not worth the investment, but if the project is 90% done, what is another $125. Problem with ratty bikes is there is always something that wants fixing, and that is not fun $ to spend.

Yea ratty bikes always somehting to fix, and painfully, even perfect looking bikes always somehting to fix. The premium you pay for the good looks, and the pain of keeping it that way, you never regain when you sell it.
I typically sell them for ~$13-1600 and these have been gone over mechanically and are sound, but cosmetically, lets just say, all the body pieces match, and there is usually no rust on any crucial parts and usually nothing more.
I have a powdercoated frame, stock GS motor, Kat FE, Kat rear wheel bike I'd gladly sell for $2200. It has perfect cosmetics too actually.
