Hey guys,

I have a tank without a key.  I removed the 4 hex key bolts holding into place but cant get it out.  Anybody have an idea other than get a key or locksmith?

Wouldn't that require some skill set? Or do you just mess around in there, till it pops?

Yes skills and a pick set ... and practice. Took me 10 mins on sunday, then I did it a few times on other locks in under 1-2 mins, then I did the new one on his tank as a showoff in 15 seconds.

You could probably find some how-to videos on the internet. I've seen a few for combination locks.

There is a way to open the lock without a key or any picks. Just need a straight pin (like a safety pin) and a flat blade screwdriver. The silver cover needs to be removed.

Erm I know you said no locksmith but when my KLR key went to shaZam! I was expecting to have to pay huge bucks for a new barrel and KLR lock set.  Went to my local locksmith (Diamond lock and key).  The girl there was great as she loves working on bike locks.  We went inside and she looked up my year of KLR and she went to town cutting me a new key.  She cut me 2 new keys for the bike and because she loves bikes and the boss was not there she gave me the 2 keys for no charge (hehehe lucky me).

She said to me any locksmith will do it you just need to ask them to "Cut To Code".  Show some ID to prove it aint stollen and hey presto new keys.

Yeah, I just need to pull the ignition lock cylinder out to get the code.  Just looking for a quick way to get into the tank if possible to check for rust.  The bike doesn't have a title to it yet and don't want to go thru all the trouble or  if  I cant't get one.

dgyver, Looks like the outer ring is attached to the cap and wouldn't I need to get the whole assembly out to remove it anyway? Or is that what the pin and screwdriver are for?

Buddha, If the above fails, can I get a pick set a say Harbor Freight.  By the way, I just bought Gino Vega's bike and am working on getting it running again.  He said you were his mechanic.   Got your prototype bars and everything.

Well lock picks ... buy from mail order. Harbor freight dont have it.
Gino's bike, yea cool, BTW VIN number is what is used to get key code. Not numbers under lock cylinder.

No. I am talking about the 1/2" diameter silver cap where the key goes. I was able to figure it out on my own. Now it takes about 1-2 minutes open one, and that is I am careful. 10 seconds if I do not care about the parts. I will not post how to open the lock without a key. PM me if you want the details.
