g'day lads and ladies, 

have been reading stuff on the gs site since i got my gs500f 3 months and 1 week ago (just got my P's!!). very informative thanks.

got the bike because i love traveling Australia (im from broken hill but live in syd) and thought it'd be an awesome way to do it.

so this weekend my dad and i are going to put our heads together and try and build a rack (similar to ventura) since they are a discontinued product (and im not paying $200 for one!). have been looking on here but havent seen anyone else build one... be great to see if someone else has built one and any probs they encountered.

also going to see if i can get some of the vstrom hand guards to modify to keep my hands warm for some winter riding.

I thought about making my own rack but without a welder and/or tube bender, it was one idea that got shelved. Let us know how you go and dont forget to throw up some pics.

im going to set one up myself, using a welder, to put my gs into service as a courier

I have the top part of the rack if you are interested in it.... the "L" bars went with the bike to heaven

There rebuilding an F at Jap M/C Dismantlers. May be yours.

if it is hope they're looking at the engine too..... looks ok but it ran for several kms with the oil light on after all the oil pissed out the holed oil cooler all down the bike, my leg etc  this was after about 2 hours (210km) of riding so she was quite warm at the time....

do you know if it's a blue/white version? and an '07 model?

bugger eh. same prob as you s4gs, no tube bender. have a welder - but kinda need a tube bender. put the project on the shelf too. 

and went to buy some vstrom handguards - the cheeky monkeys are charging $150 for the bit of plastic rubbish. gonna order them from the states for a third of the price!!!

thanks for the offer zephler might have to splurge and buy the rack. it turns out it isnt discontinued, just expensive. $400 for rack and bag and you have to buy them together.  again - its way cheaper in the states. $286 for the whole lot!! why r bike shops charging so much?

Have no idea. I was after some F mirrors but got told the only set they had where going on a GS500F that they where rebuilding.

Clair.   Get a price on just the rails or the small sports rack with rails. They should sell the sports rack/rails without a bag. Then you can grab zephler's standard size rack. Should work out cheaper.
