Question for you guys, have anyone ever tried to add a 600 engine into your bike? I'm just wondering b/c I love love the small frame of my GS but I also want to trade for a 600cc. This came to mind when the guy I bought my bike from said he had a 600 engine in the bike but I think he thought by adding a jet kit did that. would it even be worth it or just better to get a new bike if I wanted a 600?

They make really nice bikes, designed around an engines' horsepower and torque, upgraded suspension, better brakes for the added weight, all that jazz. They just happen to be... 600cc bikes from the factory.

Sure, you can squeeze in a 600 if you like, others have, but it's easier just to swap bikes and enjoy the upgrade in tech.

You may find that in the 'upgrade' you lose the cheapness of a gs though. Tires go faster, brakes more expensive, and replacement parts come at a premium. Chains and cogs don't last as long either, and it adds up.

I've gotten 24,000 miles out of a stock gs's chain so far, and it was abused by the PO. Tires, brakes, and maintenance have been so minimal (aside the carbs of course) that it's difficult to imagine a more powerful bike being anything other than a downgrade to my wallet.

Sure, i love the sv650, drz's, and other fun machines, but the ride is still fun on the gs for now ;)

An newish fuel injected 600 + pipe + power commander can put out 100hp+ easy. That is 2.5x+ a GS500. I imagine that every component in the GS would need to be upgraded to handle that. Or you could just buy a used bulletproof CBR F4i for 4k-5k that will probably still be desirable 15 years from now.

The only 2 engine swops ive heard of is a gr650 and a cr500 2 stroke ,

I yet to see a gs with a I4 Supersport engine in it

From reading his posts , seems it almost is a direct swop , some new mounts have to be made up , but its a 5 speed isnt it , pushing around 50 horses , and maybe the exhausts need to be routed around the frame,

I knew all bout his swop , and i saw it in the pics for his Katana modded front end , im defo up for it , i have my 1996 frame to mess around with :)

but 50 hp isnt a supersport engine , would make it a torquey old girl ,tho!

im just thinking there hasnt been a supersport swop ,

Im been thinking about a Dr650 engine , a big big single , but i dont think it wuld have the torgue , but it would fit i recon , being its just a big single

go for the I 4....easy swap....been done hundreds of times

the GR kinda fell into the frame....and i think Average and I installed it before Budduh decided to show up

the DR650 doesn't have torque.....a big friggin single has torque and was faster than the GS at the track
but it is a 5 speed...but with torque....a 5 speed will do....

the CR(older ones that i know of) only had a 4 speed wide ratio...bado....and trying to spin the piston at WFO for long periods of time....usually results in pieces parts

GR goes in easier than the GS ... its shorter front to back, but taller and wider. But, its somehow easier. The T brace (I cut it and made it unboltable) and the rest is easy. I am running the GR head, but gs head may be better. Maybe ...
Cool.

The only reason I could see in putting a 600 in a gs500 would be to cheat the insurance company and get a faster bike with out paying insurance for one.

There's one critical problem with I4 engines. The engine has to be heavily offset to the right to get the chain to get close to lining up to the rear wheel. So half of the engine would be hanging out of the right side of the frame.Enough said.

Going back in time and reading this, and this post sparked interest in my noggin..

It WOULD have to be offset to the right.... With a stock rim.

Shoehorn a wider swingarm, maybe from a donor bike thats totaled from a front end collision.... and you wouldn't need to offset the motor.

A 600cc motor usually isn't much wider or bigger than our 500's, least the ones I seen.

-really thinking about getting a cheap titled gs500 rolling chassis, and a totaled older cbr or r6 (with carbs, make life easier) and sticking it in the frame.

The hardest thing should be fabbing some mounts, and altering the donor swingarm to fit.

Another option you could do if you wanted to keep the stock look, is to make an exterior drive shaft that took the chain from the final drive, to the inside sprocket. 2 chains on an offset driveshaft. Though working that around the foot peg area without chewing up laces and eating toes would be a bit harder.

This thread needs pictures, even if just CAD mock-ups.

This threads long dead, I necro'd it on a crazy idea that im thinking about.

Dont think he has pics or drawings.  :icon_mrgreen:

I don't remember how long ago, but someone had a built on here where they stuffed a cbr F2 or F3 engine into a gs500. He had to do a bit of cutting and rewelding for it to fit, and I don't remember if he ever finished it and got it running, but he at least got it in there, which was the hard part. Try doing some searches for various forms of cbr/cbr600/f2/f3 and see if anything comes up. He had plenty of pictures and everything.

cbrfx!

Hence what sparked my interest.
