I'm looking to replace my standard 89GS tank for something with more capacity.  Has anyone out there ever researched which tanks will fit and what MODs might be needed to make it fit?  Also, I was researching how to lower my Trip Tree mounted bars but the thread I was linked too had no pictures to reference (broken link).  Either way, does anyone have pics of this MOD so I have something to work from?  I learned to ride on an 83 Kawa 250 with Clubman bars (I tried to make it a cafe racer but the power band got real old, real fast) and even though the riding stance on the 89 is lower, it's still too upright for my comfort zone...plus I'm too Damn cheap to buy Clip ons.  Thanks.

supposedly, people have been able to fit 01+ tanks on pre01 gs'. (01+ tanks are bigger than pre 01 tanks).

Same link as this thread.

01+ tanks are a direct fit... BUT... the 01+ seat, tail & brake lights do not bolt on directly. Different mounting points are required. I have done it with cutting and welding new brackets.

The 01+ tank can be fitted with the 89-00 seat but the front of the seat bends out some.

No other tanks from other bikes are known to fit.
Common sense in not very common.

If yours is an 89 it should have clip-ons If not, its either a 1990+ or someone changed them  :thumb: the best thing for the style you want are either SM2's or the 89 clipons ( I have a set on bith of my GS's and I LOVE EM')  :icon_mrgreen:

As far as more fuel capacity ??? The GS has more than most bikes I have seen, There are very few bikes that hold more that 5gal  :thumb:

Thanks for the input.  I have the clipons on my 89, but the riding standance is still more upright then I'd like.  I have heard of the clip ons being "flipped"  but with out a picture or something to work off of, I'd rather not tackle that project only to find out I need to make a trip to HD or Lowes for extra hardware.  Anyone every "Flip" their clip ons?

89 clip on's cannot be  flipped.
You cant get the ones that go under the triple on any GS older than 03. The headlight ears get in the way.
Cool.

Aww, quit being cheap and buy the vortex clip-ons from motorcyclesuperstore for 89 bucks and mount them under the top triple if you want a low stance.  37mm will fit if the headlight bracket doesn't get in the way.  or mod the clubman bars to widen them a bit.  I've seen one in the last few days that showed a pic but couldn't tell you where it was.  I just got a set of european and superbike bars because my drag bars were really low and kinda hurt the wrist after a hundred miles or so.  You could get drag bars if you want to though.

best pic I could come up with to show height.

I have an 89 with an o4 tank.Stock 89 clip ons do hit when turning deep left.

My bike looks a little different now,but still has the 04 tank.

I'm cutting down the front of my seat so it lines up with the tank.
PICS are GONE never TO return.
