Numerous reasons....better horsepower, less weight, better appearance, nicer sound...etc..etc..

what horsepower. the GS wont gain any HP with the addition of a full system unless you add a new intake(maybe a custom Ram air) and a rejet. or maybe not

Better filter and exhaust plus a rejet doesn't really add much if any power. It just makes the power range broader thru the rpms. Also helps with better throttle response.I'd stay away from Vance and Hines. The header has to be dropped for every oil filter change.

Oh yea a full system will do none of those that you want ... A different bike ... like a GSXR 750 will do all of those ...
And yes it will need to be removed every oil change, but that's OK, it will have to be painted every oil change too ... else it will rot and crumble and fall apart right in front of your eyes. Especially the V&H.
Cool.

Looks like the Jardine is the best one to go with, being stainless and allowing oil changes without dropping the pipe. Anyway, the stock pipe is a POS so it's going.

Jardine can is stainless, header pipe is also SS ???
Cans never rust, they all are aluminum or stainless or Titanium. The header will rot away if non SS.
Cool.

if you let in more air plus more fuel and you let out more air your going to make more power it doesn't matter what motor you do it to.

spc

yup and what people are trying to tell you is that at a point you heads and valves are a serious limiting factor.  I don't care how much air you feed the engine if the valves are too small it doesn't do any good.  Between a slip-on/flanged exhaust and a full system you *might* see one hp difference or so, but even with a lunchbox, rejet and full system you are only looking at a 40hp bike.   You want power out of your 500?  Get the valves done a few mm over, mill the head, cryo the crank, rip the balancer out and mill down the flywheel.  $5k later you have a bike that still isn't as powerful as an SV.  Accept the GS for what it is.

ben2go

I agree with spcterry.Another problem with the GS head is the combustion chamber is quite large and the piston doesn't top out even with the top of the cylinder.Just machining the base of the cylinder so the piston tops out even with the cylinder rim is only going to net maybe .25 of 1 horse power.Dgyver can tell you all you need to know about building a GS engine.I know he has a 541cc and a 569cc engines. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=14401.0

I have a chance to pickup a V&H sytem for $35. It has some rash on the can from the bike being laid down (but no dents). Anyone know a good procedure for removing the scratches and polishing the can.

thats a good deal mothers billets polish works good on most metals and removes some scratches or scuffs but not if they are deep in the metal

I found the solution. V&H sells new sleaves for the cans for  $30. $65 for the oval can. Just pop out the old rivets, remove the old outside of the can, and install the new one. I'll be into the whole exhaust for $65.

Did V&H make a stainless, or at least an unpainted pipe for the GS500?
