i have an 04 gs500f
does anyone know what other motors will fit? what years?
My mechanic said that any gs500 motor will work... is this true?
someone please help... im really disappointed.

You need an 02+ GS500F model engine. You need the oil cooler type engine. The standard engine may over heat trapped inside those fairings. You may need to change your carbs and ignition over to the new engine.

First off, any GS500 motor will work.
There are a couple things that are different though. Besides the oil cooler.
The 04+ motors have a different ignition rotor and 1 pickup on the backing plate vs 2 pickups on older motors.
Easy swap with your existing ignition.
The charging system has a different plug on the wiring vs 3 seperate plugs on older motors.
You can pull your flywheel side case off and install it on the new motor. No need to change flywheels :thumb:
There is also an extra plug on the wire from the nuetral switch behind the countersprocket.
I don't know what this does.  :dunno_white:
I have only installed 04+ motors in my 89 GS, so I just cut the plug off  ;)
I'm pretty sure you could swap nuetral light switches as well, if the plug was necessary.
The only other difference is black vs silver.

Are you sure the motor is blown or did your stator come loose and lock up the motor ?

This is a valid point.I didn't think about this, but if you hammer on your bike or drop it on the left side it's possible.Check these links out.

I dont know the history on the bike.. i bought it from a friend that aquired an abandoned title on it.. i got it for a grand though so i wont complain too much.
when i put it back together i heard a loud clunking noise. so i pulled off the right side cover and the clutch and there is a little hole on the bottom toward the middle. when i stuck my finger in there there was something that looked like the rod that was cracked. there were also metal shavings in the oil.
i may take the crankcase apart and compare teh broken part to the schematics on bike bandit but im pretty sure its just a better idea to change the motor.
if anyone comes across a motor please let me know..
im up for ideas too.
worst case... ill part it out and save for another one... ive got a shadow 1100 but i really liked a smaller streetbike
