Powder Coating VS Painting..

Hey everyone,

Are there any reasons why Powdercoating is used more on motorcycles? I am wanting to paint some parts on my bike, but for the quotes on powdercoating them, it seems easier to just paint them myself.. Can someone justify why powdercoating is a better choice? Also, does anyone have any nice tutorials on how to powdercoat stuff in case I could do it myself like Importbabe?

I recently painted some parts on my bike myself, and even after laying down a clear coat it still chips away very easily. I would think the main benefit of powder coating would be it's durability.

Yes, powdercoating is MUCH more durable. If you want to do it yourself you need a crapy old oven.. Unless you dont mind your baked goods tasting like paint  :thumb:

+1 for powder coating. if it's done right, it actually becomes part of the surface of the steel/alum/whatever

very tough stuff, very very tough.

what are the parts that you are looking to get done? Powdercoating is not hard at all but the prep work is the pain.

If you have rusty parts they need to be degreased and then sand blasted and pre baked, this is the reason for the cost but it will truely be 10000 times better then painting.

Just some small things.. All my parts are actually in pretty good condition, I was first interested in painting the whole bike, but it would have been alot of work. I am also thinking of using reflective tape on sections of the bike like someone had did on their helmet.. I am still throwing ideas around at the moment though..

what parts?????? what were you quoted and for what color? I bet I could do it for cheaper!!!

I first asked about just rims. It was like $50 bucks a rim.. I forgot the cost of the whole bike.. If your willing to paint some stuff for me cheaper, I wouldnt mind asking you for a few quotes.

Small parts ... dang I only do big parts  :o ...
Well anyway, I hand it off to this industrial powdercoater dude ... I coated all sorts of sheite ... fork lowers, triples, fork legs that aren't in the sliding area, dash top plate, exhausts, frames, tanks, side covers (metallic ones), fenders, grab bars, all sorts of sheite. Its really durable.
BTW sending a pair of rims from one place to another will cost you 50 bucks easy.
