I was out inspecting my bike today as the wheels are getting replaced at the local shop, and noticed this connector under the seat:

Is that supposed to be connected? I don't have the manual so I'm unsure what it does. Also, the previous owner used some sort of tacky substance to lube the chain, and now its sprayed everywhere on the lower back half of the bike:

What exactly is this stuff? How can I best remove it? Is there a recommendation for a better material to use?

Thanks guys!

Connector I'm not sure about. The chain lube is spray grease.Almost the same as axle oil used in rear drive vehicles. It's a bear to get off.I couldn't get it off without destroying the o rings in my chain. When I replaced my chain I used gas and then used spray type parts cleaner.I tried the parts cleaner first but it didn't work well. The use of gas helped turn it into a goo that the parts cleaner could take off.As far as the swing arm, plastic wheel well,I would use a plastic scraper and kerosene. Then wash the back out real good.I plan to use PJ spray wax.

Is that "spray grease" the same thing as the white lithium grease I just got?   :o

That's supposed to be the good stuff... like the old ignition grease for distributor cams...???  Or am I wrong?

Lithium is different. It will sling and attract dust but it's easier to clean.Just stay on top of it.Spray degreasers(Greased Lightening,Purple Power,etc....) will cut lithium, but you'll need a pretty stiff brush to help loosen it up.I use lithium on my garden tractors and autos.

why not use motor oil ? that way you only have to carry out one quart of 10w40 and a rag for both chain and topping off the bike before a ride.

aren't those spray lubes expensive ?

(shrug, it's what I do) :)
