I've read that stalling on braking (especially noticeable on freeway off ramps) can be electrical. was it a silent stall? so no bucking or choking, just an all of a sudden quiet engine? that would indicate electrical or valves from what I've read. If you've ruled out fuel delivery then I would test the charging system for faulty parts or connections. I've also heard it can be out of spec valves.

is your stalling anything like whats described in this post? so stop signs, red lights, off ramps....

Dchrist,

To answer your question it was a silent shut off.
I would get it going to a highway speed and later notice the loss of power.

Electrically, what can I check?

BTW
The bike started up again.
I remember when the bike quit on me that the petcock was in the ON position.

I've normally run it on RES

>>Today I put it in PRI for a few minutes
and I recharged the battery overnight.

and it started up.
I ran it in RES for a few minutes and in ON for a few minutes as well.

I noticed a surge in rpm when running in the ON position, don't know if that means anything but thought I should include that.

Surge in the ON position could be a petcock going bad.It could be leaking vacuum, sucking extra fuel thru the vacuum hose, and causing causing the surge.

Try these for some info

PICS are GONE never TO return.

I'm going to take apart the pet chicken next and see if anything is worn out.

There's a little plastic round valve in the back part of the petcock. It is rubber on the side you can't see.It turns to goop and plugs the vacuum passage sometimes. That's usually why people do the no vacuum mod. Also check the rubber diaphram really well.I do the mod on the petcocks with a metal knob for $10 and that includes return shipping.  :thumb:

The mod you are talking about. Will it convert it into a non vacuum pet chicken?

Yes,but the pattern changes. Here is what it equals to:ON=ON/RES=OFF/PRI=RES.It sounds confusing and backwards. It works by blocking the prime passage in the petcock body and rerouting the RES flow through the inner cone and out of the PRI position. You have to be careful when plugging the cone. You can loose ON and PRI and just have RES.We're trying to keep the stock operation, without vacuum and having a positive shut off in case of unknown carb problems.Usually stuck floats that floods the crank case and air box with fuel.

Okay,

So I took apart pet chicken and didn't see anything wrong with.

There was some grime built up on the inside and I sprayed it with some carb cleaner and a wire brush.

>>But I did notice that the fuel hoses were routed in correctly.

Aha!
Could that be it?

The front fuel hose from the Tank Mounted Petcock had been going to the inside instead of the back where the back where it was intended to be used for reserve fuel.

Yes they could be connected wrong.i think you may be onto some thing. On the petcock, the fitting pointing straight toward the engine is the on connection and should got to the short fitting on the tank petcock. The 90 degree fitting pointing down is the reserve and should be connected to the long fitting at the tank. That's how it is on my bike and it works correctly, but I have the petcock mod.I didn't change the hose routing.Checked it against Kerry's diagram tho.

Yeah,

I rerouted my fuel lines according to the diagram.
The diagram on the book confused me because they specify a separate route for the California models.

I also noticed that the vacuum plug on the left carb was missing so I placed a new one on.

Took it out again for a spin around some roads and on the freeway for a few miles and it felt like normal again.

Thanks!!
I was glad too.

Although I was a bit hesitant to get back on again.
I didn't want to be stranded again.

The freeway can get pretty bumpy and is capable of shaking things loose.
Like bolts for instance.
When doing my T-Clocs inspections (MSF Term)
I noticed a loose bolt on the rear brake.
I'm gonna apply some loctite on any bolt that i run into that comes loose.
