Yep my 08GS500 with 1500 km on the clock is no more.

Little old lady pulled out of a side street this morning and T - boned me .  The car impacted on my left side, highsided me and the bike (yea baby that was fun NOT).

After I came to I moved my arms, legs and my head to make sure I had not broken my back or neck.  I could hear my bike next to me engine still running in gear till the engine after about 30 seconds or so stalled.  I tried to get up but was pinned down by a police officer and a doctor both were at the scene of the crash when it happened only a few cars from one another (lucky me).  They said I was not getting up till the ambulance arrived and checked me out.

My left foot felt real bad as that took the brunt of the impact and my left shoulder hit the road first and that is bloody sore as hell..  Was taken to the hospital and checked out from head to toe....

I left the hospital about 4 hours after arriving with only a minor fracture in one of the bones in my foot (don't ask don't know which one), a shaZam! load of bruising and swelling and a bloody sore shoulder but besides that I am fine As I was doing about 50 to 60km/hr and the little old lady was doing about 20km/hr I think I came out of it rather well.

The main thing I am thankful for is I was wearing all my gear, gloves, jacket, boots, lid.  I checked my gear out when I got home and my gloves are fine, jacket is fine (shaZam! that gortex is durable) with light slide marks on back of jacket only, helmet is a bin job and left boot is torn to bits.  If it wasn't for the durability of a good riding boot I fear the damage to my left foot would have been much worse.

Wife is looking after and fussing over me so all is good (milk this one) .  Just have the headache now of having the bike looked at and either replaced or fixed.

In short....I survived, bike didn't, riding gear greatly reduced my injuries.

That's a shame... you hadn't even broken in the motor yet.

insurance works a little funny over here, the bike or vehicle once paid out then belongs to the insurance company as they have in a way paid for it.  They sell it however they like and recoup some of the insurance payout.

That's how it works over here, too. 
I don't think Buddha notice you were on the opposite side of the world.

normally you can buy your bike back from the insurance company if you choose to, at least that is the way things work in VA.

I'll agree that she probably no longer needs to be driving on public roads, but seriously why punish her more?  I'm sure she's already been traumatized enough in the incident and no one was seriously hurt.  Call it a learning experience, revoke her license and move on.........assuming her insurance pays for everything.

Punishment is the result of doing something wrong. Her disreguard for a traffic device (intentionally or not) caused a good deal of pain and expense to another human. This is the reason I believe she should loose driving privilages for a temporary time, and be fined for the accident.


No, we cannot prevent people from being dumb and not caring. Nor can we prevent them from driving (illegally) other than to lock them up. What we can do is make the fine of striking a pedestrian, cyclist,  motorist, or motorcyclist heavy enough that people might actually pay attention.


We've all done it: missed a stop sign, driven a little too fast, not seen another car/bike.

The difference is THIS TIME there was a collision. This time, there was a police officer involved, and there SHOULD BE a fine.

Gotta love the little old ladies.  I passed one on the highway yesterday doing 20 in a 55.  Unfortunately, here in America, there's very little in the way of public transportation.  The AARP types fight hard for their driving privilages as that's the only hold they have left on independence.  As a consequence, there are thousands of old drivers out there incapable of maintaining control of their vehicle due to advanced age.  (-and basically nothing to lose but their license, which they know they'll eventually lose anyway!)

Hope you're back on two wheels soon!   

Oh, and here's to hoping wife unit hasn't gone "Motorcycles are dangerous, see?" on you.

Steve...very glad you came out of it relatively ok!  Could have been a totally different story.  GEAR RULES!!!!!!

I absolutely HATE it when some hot-shot biker tells me they don't need gear because "they know how to ride a bike".  They just can't wrap their tiny little brains around the fact that while they may indeed know how to ride...its the others that don't know how to DRIVE that are the major concern.  

I hope it was just one honest mistake on the old ladies part.  I try not to jump to the conclusion that every old person is senile and should be removed from the road.  I am MUCH more concerned about 16 year-old girl with a cigarette in one hand, texting with the other, talking to her friends in the back seat, and driving with her knee.

I don't blame the little old lady for what she did as it could have been anyone at that side street. 

I was on a duel lane road and the left lane was banked up and the right lane (my lane) was still flowing with almost no traffic in it.  The cars in the left lane had left a gap due to the side street so cars could enter and exit the side street.  So here comes me in the empty lane minding my own business and she pulls out.  The situation was just real bad luck as the cars would have been blocking her vision to be able to see anything on the right hand lane.

The street in question is a rather bad street as visibility is poor for cars exiting the street.  Hell even I didn't see her exiting the street with all the cars round.  It is a busy road as it is a major road leading onto the freeway.  I am always cautious of this street when passing it but on this particular day Stealth Granny driving her Stealth car got me.

Having some breakfast now with wife and feeling rather sore and sorry for myself.  Foot does not feel too bad even with the fracture but my left shoulder bloody hell that hurts bad.

Yes the wife and my Martial arts master drilled me and hassled me to buy a car (I should have instructed a class the night of the accident).  But as I kindly reminded them I have 3 wives in this life. 1 my Lovely wife Carolyn, 2 my lovely GS500 and 3 my martial arts.  I am not about to divorce any of them so give up annoying me to buy a car.

i think revocation is harsh. BUT a punishment is in order however the local govt decides that. . but to OP yeah glad you survived the run in. most ppl when they have a fenderbender. dont automatically have their license revoked. and yes terry i do know the law on that so no need to go legalese on me 

How is it any more harsh than me losing my license for 24mph over??  I didn't actually cause anyone any real harm.

I should have elaborated.  I believe that if the government is going to hold persons under 21 to a different accountability level they need to do the same with elderly persons.  In Georgia, a person under 21 automatically faces a 6 month suspension of their license for any single stop resulting in 3 or more reported points on their license, while some 76 year old lady can plow through a f%$king stop light putting a half dozen people in the hospital and drive away from the incident.  It's bullshit, it doesn't even affect me anymore and it's f%$king bullshit and it needs to be changed.  I think there should be an age where yearly on-road drivers tests are administered along with quarterly vision checks.
