Hi everybody,
Picked up me first bike last night and drove it home (99 GS500E) beautiful ride and bike. However, I have no owners booklet and am wondering about shift points. I was upshifting around 5000 rpm give or take that felt about right. AS I am a new rider and at the moment only riding around town, I will not be "winding it up" on the highway for a while yet, so am just curious about shift points.
Thanks

The time to shift depends on road conditions, expected acceleration, and a few other things. Take the MSF course. They'll teach you well.

The usable rpm range is from around 2,000 rpm to 9,500 rpm, with 1200-1500 being idle. If -YOU- like upshifting at 5,000, that's fine. The gs generally doesn't charge the battery below 4,000 rpm, just a pointer for keeping things in good shape.

never shift in a turn

Enjoy the ride, take your time, and if you don't have a mature, knowledgable buddy to help you check over your bike before riding, take it to a dealer for a check out.
